Tired yet?

Roslindale native Corey Gatewood has been busy since he moved from Boston to Palo Alto, Calif., in mid-June, after graduating from Belmont Hill School, to begin training for his freshman year as a defensive back for Stanford's football team. Here’s a look at his typical day:

Before training camp started (four days per week from mid-June until the beginning of August):

Morning (three hours): Lifting and running. Lifting was done according to Stanford’s regimen, which focused on high-repetition, low-weight lifts that mimicked on-field movements. Examples include bench press, squats, Olympic-style lifts, and medicine-ball exercises. Running included 120- and 300-yard shuttles and change-of-direction cone drills.

Afternoon: Classes. Gatewood started taking classes soon after arriving in Palo Alto, to get ahead and adjust to college life. He's taking classes in calculus and English, and hopes to major in premedicine.

Evening (two to three hours): Team practices. NCAA regulations prohibit teams from practicing before a certain date (this year Aug. 5), but captain's practices begin earlier in the summer.

Training camp (“all day, every day," according to Gatewood, starting Aug. 5):

Morning (two to three hours): Practice. This includes drills, running plays, and scrimmaging. Some days, the team also practices in the afternoon.

Afternoons/evenings (two to three hours): Meetings, lifting, and classes. Now that Stanford’s players can meet with coaches, it's not just about on-field play — Gatewood is involved in classroom-like meetings to learn plays and strategies on defense and special teams. He can spend as much as eight hours a day on football. He’s also finishing up his summer classes. “It’s not too bad, I guess," he said. “Still got to get the work done."
