The offensive line is starting to take shape, quarterback Matt Ryan is slowly getting his "game face" on, the wide receivers have shown flashes of talent that raise hopes for a more vertical type of offense, but what about Boston College's running game?

It is uncertain at best as the regular-season opener against Wake Forest approaches.

This is what we have thus far:

L.V. Whitworth. He hasn't participated in any of the three scrimmages and is nursing an injury (hamstring?), which coach Jeff Jagodzinski says is getting better. He should be available for the opener, but before he plays, he must practice. Yesterday was his first day back.

A.J. Brooks. He has been the most productive running back, with 105 yards on 30 carries in three scrimmages, but whether he has emerged as a primary back is still very much in question.

Andre Callender. He is solid, reliable, and dependable, but not spectacular. He has played in two scrimmages, with 69 yards in 20 carries.

Jeff Smith. Potential. Potential. But he has yet to be productive. He missed two of three scrimmages with injuries, but has 69 yards in 14 carries. Confidence is the key -- his own, and whether Jagodzinski has confidence to let him be a primary back.

John Siravo. He was a scout team back last season. He has 44 yards in 23 carries.

There is a chance that the fullbacks -- James McCluskey and Michael Kozicz -- might get more work, but that doesn't answer many running back questions.

Jagodzinski and offensive coordinator Steve Logan are trying to mix and match offensive sets, players and strategies, but three scrimmages and three weeks into fall camp, it has yet to result in any consistency.

"We've got everybody back but Jeff now," said Jagodzinski before last night's practice. "But we'll be fine. I've got to make a decision pretty quick who's going to be the guy."

Jagodzinski said he might even compromise.

"Hopefully we can use both [Callender and Whitworth]," he said.

Next in line
Right tackle Anthony Castonzo will become the first true freshman to start on the offensive line for the Eagles since Paul Zukauskas in 1997. Jagodzinski coached Zukauskas when he was at BC as Tom O'Brien's offensive coordinator . . . Although there might be some last-minute requests from the ACC for a switch, the Eagles are scheduled to open next season on Aug. 28, a Thursday night, at Kent State. "It's a two-for-one," said BC athletic director Gene DeFilippo. "They come here in 2009 and 2010. DeFilippo said the ACC could ask the Eagles to play in a marquee television opener (conference or nonconference opponent) but he thought the possibility of that was remote . . . The Eagles finished their last two-a-day session yesterday. They will have their fourth and final scrimmage this afternoon, although Jagodzinski says it will be more of a "situational" type scrimmage, with specific plays.
