Santos, UNH refuse to be outclassed in win over Marshall

Bellingham's Ricky Santos threw three touchdown passes and ran for a fourth score, leading New Hampshire to a 48-35 win over Marshall yesterday at Huntington, W. Va.

New Hampshire (1-1), ranked No. 12 in the Championship Subdivision poll, jumped ahead, 24-0, at halftime, withstood a Marshall (0-3) comeback bid, and won its third straight game against a Bowl Subdivision team, beating Rutgers in 2004 and Northwestern last season.

Santos completed 23 of 33 passes for 289 yards and added a 3-yard TD run in the second quarter.

Villanova 24, Maine 17 - Matt Dicken tied the game with a 67-yard touchdown catch and then ran for the winning 3-yard score in overtime as the Wildcats (2-1, 1-0 Colonial Athletic) rallied past the Black Bears (1-2, 0-1).

Jhamal Fluellen rushed for 170 yards and two scores for Maine.

Delaware 38, Rhode Island 9 - Joe Flacco passed for 336 yards and three touchdowns, and Austin Love had 10 catches for 137 yards and a score as the ninth-ranked Blue Hens (3-0, 2-0) rolled over the Rams (0-3, 0-2).

Big East

UConn 22, Temple 17 - Andre Dixon ran for 129 yards and Donald Brown had two touchdown runs as the Huskies (3-0) edged the Owls (0-3) at East Hartford.

Ivy League

Colgate 31, Dartmouth 28 - Mike Buck kicked a 36-yard field goal in overtime as the Red Raiders (2-1), riding Jordan Scott's 211 rushing yards and three touchdowns, stormed back from a 28-0 deficit to defeat the Big Green (0-1) at Hanover, N.H.

Yale 28, Georgetown 14 - Mike McLeod ran for 157 yards and a career-high four touchdowns as the Bulldogs (1-0) opened their 136th season with a victory over the Hoyas (0-1) at Washington.

Brown 28, Duquesne 17 - Michael Dougherty passed for three touchdowns and Dereck Knight rushed for 208 yards on 33 carries to lead the Bears (1-0) over the Dukes (0-2) at Providence.

Assumption 71, Saint Anselm 21 - At Manchester, N.H., freshman Herbert Woodard carried 20 times for 277 yards and a school-record-tying five touchdowns as the Greyhounds (1-2, 1-1) took a 43-7 first-quarter lead and walloped the Hawks (0-2, 0-1).

Central Conn. 56, Southern Conn. 34 - At New Britain, Jo Jo Freeman ran for three touchdowns in the first half and gained 147 yards on 20 carries to lead the Blue Devils (2-1) over the Owls (2-1).

N.E. Conference

Salve Regina 21, Bridgewater St. 6 - Jeff St. Onge threw for 196 yards and two touchdowns, and the Seahawks (1-1) ended a seven-game losing streak to the host Bears (1-1). Framingham St. 17, MIT 10 - At Cambridge, Roland Gervais hauled in a 19-yard touchdown pass with 1:54 remaining, and the Rams (1-1, 1-0) scored 14 points in the final five minutes to overtake the Engineers (0-2, 0-1).

Curry 42, Westfield St. 27 - Ryan Van De Giesen threw for 232 yards and four touchdowns to help the Colonels (3-0) overcome a 27-21 halftime deficit and defeat the host Owls (1-1).

WNEC 21, Maine Maritime 13 - At Castine, Maine, Justin Walz passed for 301 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and rushed for another score as the Golden Bears (2-1) held off the Mariners (1-1), who scored the final 13 points.

Worcester St. 17, Nichols 10 - Aaron McCraine scored on a 1-yard run with 10:47 remaining, giving the Lancers (1-2) the winning margin over the Bison (1-1) at Dudley.

Mass. Maritime 13, Endicott 3 - At Beverly, Joe DeFrank tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Joe St. Pierre, and the Buccaneers (2-1) forced the Gulls (1-1) into committing five turnovers.

UMass-Dartmouth 48, Fitchburg St. 35 - J.T. Harold ran for 195 yards and five touchdowns on just 16 carries, and the visiting Corsairs (1-2) took a 41-7 at the half and cruised past the Falcons (0-2).

Plymouth St. 38, Coast Guard 19 - Jeff Mack carried 29 times for 154 yards and a touchdown to boost the host Panthers (2-0) over the Bears (1-1).
