John Clements returned a kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown and Hugo Souza ran 22 yards with a fumble for another score as New Hampshire topped Army, 28-10, yesterday in West Point, N.Y.

Army took the early lead but Clements responded with his kickoff return to make it 7-7. UNH (1-0) recovered a fumble to set up another score as Army fell to 0-2.

Army quarterback Carson Williams was injured early in the second quarter, hurting his left thumb (non-throwing hand), and did not return. He was 7 for 7 for 95 yards and a TD before the injury.

For the second consecutive week, turnovers and a big kickoff return hurt the Black Knights, who lost their opener to Temple, 35-7.

R.J. Toman hit 11 of 16 for 131 yards with one interception for the Wildcats, and Chad Kackert ran for 65 yards and a score on 10 carries.

Collin Mooney led Army with 57 yards on 16 carries.

Momentum swung UNH's way early in the second quarter when the Wildcats took a 14-7 lead on Kackert's 23-yard run. The score came eight plays after Lance Mailloux recovered Mooney's unforced fumble at the UNH 26. Army had been driving from its 31, with Williams throwing four completions during an 11-play drive before the fumble.

Maine 21, Monmouth 17 - Adam Farkes threw three touchdown passes, including the winner with less than three minutes to play, to lead the Black Bears to a nonconference victory at West Long Branch, N.J.

Facing fourth and 21 from the Monmouth 23, Farkes's pass to the end zone was deflected by a Maine player and then caught by tight end Derek Buttles. The score capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive on which Farkes completed all four of his passes.

On the day, Farkes completed 17 of 27 attempts for 207 yards. His other touchdown passes were a 16-yard strike to Landis Williams just before halftime and a 27-yarder to Jeremy Kelley midway through the third quarter.

Williams had six receptions for 61 yards to lead Maine (1-1), while Jhamal Fluellen had 102 yards on 26 carries.

James Madison 56, N.C. Central 7 - The Dukes vaulted to a 35-0 halftime lead and cruised to an easy victory over the Eagles at Harrisonburg, Va.

JMU led in total yardage, 449-203, with a decided advantage in rushing, 276-81.

Rodney Landers completed 13 of 17 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 31 yards and a score on three carries.

Towson 21, Morgan State 16 - Sean Schaefer threw three touchdown passes and became the host Tigers' all-time leading passer in a victory over the crosstown rival Bears.

Schaefer threw for 243 yards for a career total of 8,931, surpassing Dan Crowley's mark of 8,900.
