RALEIGH, N.C. - For the record, he had only three tackles, but all were solo and all were sacks of North Carolina State quarterback Russell Wilson.

For Boston College defensive tackle B.J. Raji, yesterday's 38-31 win over the Wolfpack at Carter-Finley Stadium will no doubt go on any highlight tape he prepares for National Football League scouts this winter. As it was, a dozen scouts watched Raji and the Eagles outslug and outlast N.C. State in a battle of wills and skills.

"We had a great game plan," said Raji. "But the coaches said to be patient. As the game progressed, things opened up a little bit in terms of chasing QBs."

For Raji, who missed last season because of academic issues, his mission this season is clear: help the Eagles get back into the Atlantic Coast Conference title game and elevate his status as an NFL prospect.

The Eagles came into the game with a 3-1 record, but an 0-1 mark in the ACC. "You don't want to start out 0-2 in the conference, I don't care what conference you are playing in," Raji said.

Two down
The Eagles had two injuries of note. Wide receiver Rich Gunnell appears to have bruised a bone in his leg, and wide receiver Brandon Robinson was "dinged," according to coach Jeff Jagodzinski. "I never want to see this place again," joked Robinson after the game, referring to the concussion he suffered two years ago in what turned into a 17-15 loss to N.C. State . . . BC quarterback Chris Crane threw for a career-high 428 yards yesterday, the most allowed by N.C. State since 2003 against Texas Tech . . . The Eagles have a bye next week and will face Virginia Tech at Alumni Stadium in two weeks . . . BC scored its first first-quarter touchdowns since its season opener against Kent State . . . The 21 first-quarter points were the most scored by the Eagles since Dec. 31, 2003, in the San Francisco Bowl in a 35-21 win over Colorado State.
