Three missed FGs help sink UConn

Kordell Young rushed for 79 yards and a touchdown and kicker Tony Ciaravino's 42-yard field goal attempt hit the right upright with 1:09 remaining, allowing Rutgers to escape with a win over Connecticut, 12-10, yesterday in Piscataway, N.J.

UConn (5-2, 1-1 Big East) dropped its second straight game after Ciaravino missed three field goals. He was 8 for 11 on the season before yesterday.

The win was the first for Rutgers (2-5, 1-2) against a Bowl Subdivision opponent this year.

Donald Brown, the nation's leading rusher at 177.8 yards per game, ran for 106 yards but was held to just 6 on 11 carries after halftime.

Central Conn. 35, Duquesne 23 - James Mallory ran for 126 yards and three TDs to lift the host Blue Devils (5-2, 2-1 Northeast) past the Dukes (2-4, 1-3).

Albany 26, Sacred Heart 21 - David McCarty rushed for 207 yards and a touchdown, leading the visiting Great Danes (4-3, 3-0 Northeast) past the Pioneers (6-1, 2-1).

Bryant 20, Robert Morris 7 - In Smithfield, R.I., Anthony DiNaso caught a pair of touchdown passes, while Pat Gauthier had three of eight sacks by the Bulldogs (4-3) in a win over the Colonials (2-5).

AIC 42, Pace 20 - Kertis Hussey caught two TD passes and returned a punt 70 yards for another score, leading the host Yellow Jackets (7-0, 5-0 Northeast-10) past the Setters (4-4, 3-2). The win extended AIC's school-record winning streak to 13 games.

Merrimack 27, Bentley 11 - Richard Johnson rushed for 75 yards and two touchdowns, pacing the visiting Warriors (4-3, 3-2 NE-10) over the Falcons (3-5, 2-3).

Stonehill 31, Assumption 7 - Cruz Parsons passed for 199 yards and a TD, helping the host Skyhawks (2-5, 1-4 NE-10) snap a five-game losing streak by routing the Greyhounds (1-6, 1-4).

Southern Conn. 56, Saint Anselm 0 - John Wiechman ran for two touchdowns, helping host Owls (5-2, 4-1 NE-10) drub the Hawks (1-6, 1-4).

Curry 46, Endicott 27 - Ryan Van De Giesen passed for 324 yards and two TDs and the Colonels (7-0, 4-0) gained 229 yards on the ground as they extended their New England Football Conference winning streak to 37 with a romp over the host Powergulls (2-5, 1-3).

Plymouth St. 36, Nichols 9 - John DeMarco ran for two scores and passed for another and the visiting Panthers (6-1, 4-0 NEFC) rolled to an easy win over the Bison (2-5, 0-4).

UMass-Dartmouth 41, Salve Regina 33 - J.T. Harold rushed for 155 yards and a TD and Alvin Morris returned an interception 33 yards for a score, helping the host Corsairs (2-2, 2-2 NEFC) hold off the Seahawks (3-3, 2-2).

Maine Maritime 26, Mass. Maritime 7 - Fullback Jim Bower and quarterback Tyler Angell rushed for a combined 319 yards and four touchdowns to power the host Mariners (4-3, 3-1 NEFC) over the Buccaneers (0-7, 0-4).

Bridgewater St. 38, Coast Guard 7 - Bruce Burley ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns and Jesse Resende gained 116 yards and also scored a TD, lifting the host Bears (4-3, 3-1 NEFC) past Coast Guard (2-4, 2-2).

MIT 48, WNEC 15 - DeRon Brown and Robert Utz totaled 351 rushing yards and the Engineers (4-3, 2-2 NEFC) tied a school record with seven rushing TDs in a rout of the Golden Bears (1-6, 1-3) in Cambridge.

Fitchburg St. 42, Worcester St. 28 - Marlon Thornton rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns and Jim Miller passed for 226 yards and three scores as the host Falcons (3-4, 3-1 NEFC) held off the Lancers (2-5, 2-2).

Westfield St. 27, Framingham St. 0 - Jason Proule ran for two touchdowns and the Owls (4-3, 2-2 NEFC) turned three turnovers into touchdowns in their rout of the visiting Rams (3-4, 1-3).

Tufts 17, Williams 7 - Will Forde rushed for 133 yards and a TD and the Jumbos (3-2, 3-2 NESCAC) shut down the Ephs (3-2, 3-2) to beat Williams for the first time since 1986.

Trinity 40, Bowdoin 16 - Oliver Starnes ran for two TDs and the Bantams (5-0, 5-0 NESCAC) forced five turnovers in a rout of the host Polar Bears (1-4, 1-4).

Springfield 43, Mount Ida 23 - Jason Hurlock caught a pair of TD passes from Josh Carter and the host Pride (2-4) pulled away to down the Mustangs (2-4).
