Bobby Evers of Holliston has been a fixture on the offensive line at Worcester Poly Tech since his freshman season. This year, the 6-foot-2-inch, 290-pound senior left tackle has helped pave the way for the program's best start since 1992.
"Evers doesn't make mental mistakes and he's our most important lineman in protecting the passer," said WPI head coach Ed Zaloom, whose team improved to 6-1 with a 21-14 win over Rochester.
Evers's teammates include sophomores Michael Oliveri, a linebacker from Milford, and running back Tom Fontecchio of Shrewsbury, who graduated from St. John's High. The freshman contingent includes Mike Ashettino , an offensive lineman from Marlborough, wide receivers Mohamed Yatim of Shrewsbury and Scott Brady of Westborough and defensive linemen Dan Nyren of Medway and Peter Gill of Franklin.
Oliveri had five tackles against Rochester, while Gill is the only first year player listed on the two-deep depth chart
"Oliveri also plays on special teams, is our snapper on punts, and has done a tremendous job at linebacker against physical teams," said Zaloom. "Gill could develop into one of the best defensive tackles ever at WPI and in Division 3."
Other notables from last weekend:
University of Connecticut redshirt freshman David Teggart of Northborough, handling placekicking duties for the first time in his college career, connected on all four field goal attempts, including a 47-yarder, and was also perfect on four extra points in a 40-16 triumph over Cincinnati. He was named the Big East Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week.
Teggart's former Algonquin Regional High teammate, Plymouth State University sophomore linebacker Steve Campbell of Northborough, led the Panthers defense with nine tackles and a sack as PSU (7-1) ended Curry College's New England Football Conference 37-game winning streak with a 28-17 win.
With his 24-yard field goal in Bentley's 30-12 win against Saint Anselm, junior Tyler McNamara of Medway raised his school career record total to 27 field goals (also a Northeast-10 record). His 146 points are the most by a Bentley kicker.![]()
