Yale throws Brown for loss

Peter Balsam had a 78-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter and Tom Mante added two field goals as Yale beat Brown, 13-3, yesterday in Providence.

The loss knocked the Bears (5-3, 4-1) out of sole possession of first place in the Ivy League, while Yale improved to 5-3, 3-2.

Brook Hart (22 for 32, 292 yards) found Balsam wide open near midfield, and the sophomore took it in for the clinching score with 3:49 remaining.

Brown quarterback Mike Dougherty was 28 of 54 for 276 yards.

Cornell 37, Dartmouth 14 - At Ithaca, N.Y., Nathan Ford completed 25 of 30 passes for 306 yards and Andy Wade returned a blocked field goal 69 yards for a TD as the Big Red (4-4, 2-3) beat the Big Green (0-8, 0-5) to snap a four-game losing streak.
