An announcement by Boston College athletic director Gene DeFilippo about a new football coach is possible early this week, perhaps as soon as tomorrow.

DeFilippo, who could finish his interviews today in his efforts to replace the fired Jeff Jagodzinski, focused on those currently involved with the program in his talks at the end of last week.

Among those he discussed the position with were offensive coordinator Steve Logan, defensive coordinator Frank Spaziani, assistant head coach Jack Bicknell Jr., and associate athletic director for football operations Barry Gallup, all of whom have expressed interest in the job.

With those interviews completed, DeFilippo is now focusing on outside candidates.

According to sources familiar with the process, DeFilippo is looking at Richmond coach Mike London and Florida offensive coordinator Steve Addazio.

Addazio is known as a great recruiter, has New England connections, and his work with the Gators helped them win the national championship. Florida coach Urban Meyer has said Addazio is someone BC should consider.

However Addazio, who played his college ball at Central Connecticut State, has been in the hospital since the Gators returned from beating Oklahoma in the title game Thursday night, dealing with an infection in the knee he had replaced last summer.

DeFilippo also has a connection with Addazio through his son, John, who coached with Addazio at Notre Dame when both were on Tyrone Willingham's staff.

Last night, East Carolina athletic director Terry Holland tried to quell talk that his coach, Skip Holtz, also was being eyed by BC.

Holland put out a statement that no one had asked for permission to talk to any of his coaches.

Holtz, who has a coaching stop at UConn on his résumé and has turned East Carolina into a highly competitive program, hosted recruiting events over the weekend and was at the team banquet Saturday.

The other question at BC is money, with a settlement having been reached on the remaining three years of Jagodzinski's contract.

BC might have to pay a buyout as part of luring a new coach. In addition, the new coach likely would receive a contract of at least five years, with a total compensation of $1 million per year the most likely starting point.
