And the leader in the clubhouse at quarterback for Boston College after last night’s first scrimmage at Alumni Stadium is . . . well, no one really.

Although 25-year-old freshman David Shinskie was thought to be the front-runner entering the scrimmage, just like during the spring and the first week of practice, no one emerged as a clear-cut leader.

Thus first-year coach Frank Spaziani and offensive coordinator Gary Tranquill will break down tape today and decide on a pecking order.

Shinskie, the former minor league pitcher who last played competitive football six years ago in high school in Pennsylvania, showed as much rust as talent. His first pass was tipped and intercepted by defensive end Max Holloway and returned 6 yards for a touchdown. Shinskie’s final numbers for the night were 3 of 8 for 22 yards.

Redshirt freshman Justin Tuggle, who started the scrimmage, was sacked and threw a pick in his first few series. He was 2 of 6 for 9 yards.

Junior Codi Boek fumbled and was sacked in his first two series, completing 4 of 6 for 15 yards.

And true freshman Mike Marscovetra, who seemed to be the most effective signal-caller in his first series, also was picked off. He went 5 of 6 for 45 yards.

All of which did not help the coaches make a decision.

“If you have four, you don’t have any,’’ Spaziani said after the scrimmage.

“We have to have a meeting of the minds. We’ll take this and digest it. We’ll look at the tapes and talk about it and make a decision and go with it. It’s not as clear cut as you like, but we have to go with it.’’

“There wasn’t too much too like,’’ he said.

With the next scrimmage Wednesday and the opener against Northeastern three weeks from yesterday, a decision must be made quickly. The leader still is likely to be Shinskie.

Steve Aponavicius made two of three field goals, converting from 40 and 27 yards and missing from 32. Ryan Quigley missed from 42 and 32 . . . Wide receiver Clarence Megwa missed the scrimmage with a finger injury. He is expected to be out a few days. Running back Jeff Smith (back) and defensive end Jim Ramella (burner) did not participate . . . Josh Haden led the rushers with 32 yards on five carries . . . The Eagles will have their first day off Thursday.
