Junior college transfer Kyle Havens will be the University of Massachusetts’s starting quarterback when the team opens at Kansas State Saturday, coach Kevin Morris announced yesterday. Havens, from Concord, Calif., had been competing with returning senior Scott Woodward, who was the backup to Liam Coen the last three years . . . Bentley quarterback Bryant Johnson marched his offense 70 yards in 13 plays in the second half for the Falcons’ first touchdown en route to a 14-13 come-from-behind victory over Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, Ohio . . . Several Michigan players, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they fear repercussions, told the Detroit Free Press the program regularly violates NCAA rules on training and practice sessions. Coach Rich Rodriguez and the university’s compliance director, Judy Van Horn, both denied the program was in violation of the rules, which allow eight hours a week for mandatory workouts in the offseason. Mets’ Wright is ready to come off DL
David Wright is ready to get back on the field with the New York Mets, two weeks after he was hit in the helmet by a fastball from San Francisco pitcher Matt Cain. The third baseman, who has been on the 15-day disabled list with a concussion, is expected to be activated Tuesday . . . Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano went for an MRI to check out his painful left knee . . . Hiroki Kuroda has come through a throwing session without any problems, bringing him one step closer to rejoining the Los Angeles Dodgers. Verdasco, Wozniacki win Pilot Pen
Fernando Verdasco won the Pilot Pen tournament in New Haven, beating Sam Querrey, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), in the final tuneup for the US Open. The second-seeded Verdasco, 25, fought off four set points in the second set, three of them in the tiebreaker, to win his first title of the season and third of his career. Caroline Wozniacki took her second consecutive Pilot Pen women’s title, beating Elena Vesnina, 6-2, 6-4, earning her sixth title, and third this year.MLS
Beckham sparks Galaxy over Chivas
David Beckham scored in the 80th minute to lead the Galaxy to a 1-0 win over Chivas USA in Los Angeles. Beckham’s goal was his first in league play since rejoining the Galaxy (9-4-11) July 16 and moved Los Angeles within two points of conference leader Houston . . . Pablo Campos scored in the 18th minute, backup goalkeeper Chris Seitz recorded his first career victory, and Real Salt Lake earned just its 10th road victory in team history, 1-0, over the Kansas City Wizards . . .
