CHIP KELLY Ducks in a row |
Game of slots a lot less unpredictable
Some seasons you can tell after a few weeks. Sometimes it takes at least a month.
This season?
Well, it took us until Halloween and finally we have some order at the top of the college football world.
Or at least we think we do.
Here’s why:
No. 1 Florida finally looked like a defending national champion, with its quarterback playing like a Heisman Trophy winner should, in a 41-17 romp over Georgia.
Not that beating the Dawgs is all that tough these days, but for Florida it’s becoming habitual. The Gators’ record against Georgia the last 20 years? 17-3. And signal-caller Tim Tebow, who won the Heisman two years ago as a sophomore, is right back in the mix for the award.
No. 2 Texas took care of what should be its last serious challenger until bowl season with a 41-14 romp over Oklahoma State, as Colt McCoy also aided his Heisman campaign.
No. 3 Alabama did not play, but can control its destiny by winning the rest of its games and beating Florida in the Southeastern Conference title game.
Suddenly the Bowl Championship Series picture is HD flat-screen television sharp.
Texas will be in the BCS title game in Pasadena Jan. 7 against either Alabama or Florida. If both of those teams lose a game, pick a team - Boise State, Texas Christian, Cincinnati, Iowa, Oregon. That squad will be slotted against the Longhorns.
After that, well, there are still some things up in the air.
Oregon’s 47-20 romp over Southern California was impressive, indeed. It was Pete Carroll’s worst loss as coach of the Trojans and the Ducks amassed 613 yards in total offense.
“We just got destroyed,’’ said linebacker Michael Morgan.
“It really wasn’t that hard for Oregon,’’ said Carroll.
No it wasn’t. And after the game there was a long line forming to jump on the bandwagon of coach Chip Kelly’s Ducks.
Asked if it was the biggest win of his career, Kelly, a New Hampshire kid who went to UNH and served his coaching apprenticeship with the Wildcats before moving to Oregon as Mike Bellotti’s offensive coordinator, then becoming head man this season, said, “This is my biggest win this week.’’
And that’s what it was, a nice win that put the Ducks in prime position for the Rose Bowl.
But best team in the country, as newly minted Ducks fans are proclaiming? Slow down, Sparky.
The Southern Cal defense that Oregon destroyed allowed 482 yards at home against a so-so Oregon State team last week in a 42-36 Trojans victory. Rolling up points and yards against USC these days no longer qualifies as “Man bites dog.’’
And then there was that game in early September, when that pesky team from Idaho, Boise State, claimed a 19-8 win over the Ducks, which wasn’t a fluke.
You can argue that Oregon is a better team than it was in September, but you also can argue that Boise State is better now than it was then. And the first tiebreaker in any debate should be head-to-head competition.
In a season that only lasts 12-14 games, that still means something. And until Boise State loses a game, it should win the debate against Oregon.
So we’re into November and on to even more games, but right now the BCS title game looks like it will be an SEC-Big 12 showdown, which is what everyone thought it would be in September.
