(Josh Gibney/Associated PressBrandyn Harvey made a one-handed grab of Chris Whitney’s fourth-down pass for a 29-yard touchdown with 59 seconds left as visiting Villanova stunned top-ranked Richmond, 21-20, yesterday.
The fourth-ranked Wildcats (8-1, 5-1 Colonial Athletic Association) ended a 17-game winning streak by the Spiders, the defending national champions of the Championship Subdivision.
Villanova also beat Richmond (8-1, 6-1) for the second year in a row, and did it after the Spiders went ahead for the first time with 2:22 left.
Richmond missed two field goals and two extra points, including the one after the go-ahead touchdown.
The Spiders even gained one final chance to win it with a kick when they drove to the Wildcats’ 17 with 10 seconds left, but Andrew Howard’s 35-yard field goal try was wide left.
UNH 55, URI 42 - Chad Kackert rushed for 166 yards and two touchdowns as the Wildcats defeated the Rams in Durham, N.H.
R.J. Toman added 234 yards passing and two TDs on 15 of 27 completions for eighth-ranked New Hampshire (8-1, 5-1). He also rushed for 56 yards as the Wildcats won their third straight.
Rhode Island (1-8, 0-6) cut UNH’s lead to 38-36 when Chris Paul-Etienne threw a 72-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Leonard with 12:41 remaining. But Toman connected with Chris Jeannot for a 53-yard touchdown and Sean Jellison added a 4-yard scoring run to put the game out of reach.
Paul-Etienne threw for a career-high 424 yards and four touchdowns. Leonard finished with a career-high 275 yards and three touchdowns on 10 catches.
Delaware 28, Hofstra 24 - Jerry Butler scored on a 1-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter and the Blue Hens (6-3, 4-3) made a defensive stop in the final minute to defeat the visiting Pride (4-5, 2-4).
Butler, who finished with 83 yards and two TDs on 18 carries, capped a nine-play, 93-yard, game-winning drive for 23d-ranked Delaware. The drive was sparked by a 72-yard pass from Pat Devlin to Phillip Thaxton. Devlin finished with 185 yards on 14-of-22 passing.
With 49 seconds remaining, Benard Makumbi tackled Hofstra’s Cory Christopher on the Delaware 20-yard line to seal the game as the Pride attempted to convert a fourth and 1.
James Madison 22, Maine 14 - Justin Thorpe had a TD pass and scoring run, helping the host Dukes score the game’s first 22 points en route to a win over the Black Bears.
Thorpe was 9 of 13 for 133 yards for JMU (4-5, 2-4) and he added 83 yards on 17 carries.
Wide receiver Michael Brusko had 90 yards receiving and a score for Maine (4-5, 3-3), and threw for an 82-yard TD on his only pass attempt.
William & Mary 31, Towson 0 - At Williamsburg, Va., R.J. Archer ran for a touchdown and passed for another as the fifth-ranked Tribe rolled.
Jonathan Grimes and Courtland Marriner each scored on 2-yard runs for the Tribe (8-1, 5-1), who have won four games in a row. The Tribe forced three turnovers and held the Tigers (2-7, 1-5) to 201 total yards.![]()
