UMass releases 2012 schedule
The University of Massachusetts football team will have home games against Ohio, Bowling Green, Buffalo, and Central Michigan when it opens its first season as a member of the Mid-American Conference this fall.
In what is also UMass’s first season as a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision, the Minutemen will kick things off with a Thursday night game at Connecticut Aug. 30.
UMass welcomes Indiana of the Big Ten to Gillette Stadium Sept. 8 in its home opener. The Minutemen have road games against Big Ten power Michigan (Sept. 15) and Vanderbilt (Oct. 27) of the Southeastern Conference.
UMass opens its MAC schedule Sept. 22 at Miami. The Minutemen will play in the MAC’s East Division with Akron, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Kent State, Miami, and Ohio. The Minutemen will play their home games at Gillette Stadium.
UMass will not be eligible this season to win the MAC championship or qualify for a one of the league’s five bowl games. The two-year transition from the Football Championship Subdivision to FBS ends in 2013 and the Minutemen will be eligible for the league title and a bowl game that season.
Charley Molnar, a veteran coach who served as offensive coordinator at Notre Dame and Cincinnati, will lead UMass in its first season in the FBS.
