Jake Odum beats buzzer as Indiana State men’s basketball tops Miami in Diamond Head Classic

Nick Johnson blocked a layup by Chase Tapley in the closing seconds as No. 3 Arizona rallied from an 8-point deficit in the second half and remained undefeated with a 68-67 win over No. 17 San Diego State on Tuesday night in the championship game of the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu.

Mark Lyons hit two free throws with 13 seconds remaining for the last points by Arizona (12-0), which is off to its best start in 25 years.

Tapley led the Aztecs (11-2) with 19 points. He had a clear path down the left side of the lane until Johnson slid over and swatted the ball away, with the buzzer sounding during a battle for the loose ball. Neither team led by more than 2 points over the last 10 minutes.

Indiana St. 57, Miami 55 — Jake Odum banked in a 15-footer with eight-10ths of a second left in overtime to rally the Sycamores past the Hurricanes in the third-place game of the Diamond Head Classic.

Manny Arop and R.J. Mahurin scored 13 points apiece for Indiana State (7-4), which trailed by as many as 9 points and shot just 27 percent from the field.

Arop made two free throws to tie it at 55 with 1:03 left in overtime, and after Miami’s Kenny Kadji missed a shot, Indiana State got the ball and called a timeout with 29.3 seconds left.

Odum received the ensuing inbounds pass and held the ball until five seconds remained. He started to his right, pump-faked near the free throw line and hit the winning shot.

Kadji led the Hurricanes (8-3) with 13 points.

Mississippi 81, Hawaii 66 — Murphy Holloway netted 18 points to lead the Rebels to a win over the Rainbow Warriors in the fifth-place game of the Diamond Head Classic.

 Nick Williams and Marshall Henderson scored 16 points each and Aaron Jones added 10 points for Mississippi (10-2), which pulled away in the final four minutes.

Vander Joaquim led Hawaii (6-5) with 29 points and 15 rebounds. Isaac Fotu had 11 points and Christian Stanhardinger had 10 in the loss.

Jones’s putback gave the Rebels the lead for good at 65-63 with 3:40 left and his emphatic, uncontested dunk made it 69-63 with 2:21 remaining.

Henderson hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Rebels a 25-9 lead with 8:34 left in the first half. The Rainbow Warriors responded with a 21-4 run to take a 30-29 halftime lead.

San Francisco 67, East Tennessee State 49 — Cole Dickerson scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the first half, and the Dons snapped a five-game losing streak, beating the Buccaneers in the seventh-place game of the Diamond Head Classic.

San Francisco (6-6) also got 15 points from Cody Doolin and 10 from Tim Derksen.

San Francisco shot 42.1 percent on 3-pointers and dominated East Tennessee State (2-9) inside in the Buccaneers’ seventh straight defeat. San Francisco was plus-17 on the boards.
