Cincinnati finally managed to get out of its own way, avoiding late mistakes while taking advantage of a team missing its leading scorer.
Sean Kilpatrick scored 20 points and made a pair of late free throws Saturday, and the Bearcats ended a three-game losing streak with a 61-56 victory over visiting Connecticut (19-9, 9-7 Big East), which was missing Shabazz Napier, who has a nagging injury to his right foot.
The Bearcats (20-9, 8-8) got only their second win in their last six games, finishing it off by getting two turnovers in the final 20 seconds.
After a Cincinnati turnover, Kilpatrick stole the tipped inbound pass, was fouled, and made both free throws with 13.1 seconds left for a 59-56 lead. UConn’s Ryan Boatright (22 points) turned it over on an over-and-back call with 5.2 seconds left, getting trapped as he crossed midcourt and then losing the ball.
Providence 62, St. John’s 59 — Bryce Cotton scored 24 points, hitting five 3-pointers, to propel the host Friars (16-12, 8-8 Big East) past the Red Storm (16-12, 8-8).
Holy Cross 74, Colgate 59 — Dave Dudzinski scored 13 points as the Crusaders rallied to defeat the Raiders (11-20, 5-9 Patriot) in Worcester, snapping a four-game skid.
Jordan Stevens’s 3-pointer sparked a 24-4 run that gave Holy Cross (12-17, 4-10) a 13-point lead with 9:48 to go.
Princeton 68, Dartmouth 63 — Will Barrett scored a career-high 24 points, including five 3-pointers in the second half, as the host Tigers (16-9, 9-2) defeated the Big Green to take over the Ivy League lead.
Tyler Melville had 23 points for Dartmouth (7-19, 3-9).
Brown 61, Columbia 58 — Tyler Halpern hit a 3-pointer as time expired to lift the Bears (12-14, 6-6) past the host Lions (12-14, 4-8 Ivy).
Matt Sullivan scored 17 points, becoming the 26th Brown player to reach 1,000 career points, and tied the Bears’ record for career games with 115.
Yale 79, Cornell 70 — Matt Townsend scored 19 points to lead the Bulldogs (12-17, 6-6 Ivy) past the host Big Red.
Nolan Cressler and Errick Peck each scored 19 points for Cornell (13-16, 5-7).
Temple 76, Rhode Island 70 — Khalif Wyatt scored 24 points and Jake O'Brien recorded a double-double to lead the host Owls past the Rams.
O'Brien finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks for Temple (21-8, 9-5 Atlantic 10), which won its fifth straight game. Xavier Munford led Rhode Island (8-19, 3-11) with 30 points.
Bryant 85, St. Francis (Pa.) 60 — Alex Francis had 19 points and 12 rebounds as the Bulldogs trounced the visiting Red Flash (5-24, 5-13 Northeast).
Vlad Kondratyev added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Bryant (19-10, 12-6).
St. Francis (N.Y.) 92, Sacred Heart 80 — The Terriers (12-17, 8-10) clinched the final spot in the Northeast Conference tournament with their win over the visiting Pioneers.
Shane Gibson netted 29 points and Luis Montes 20 for Sacred Heart (9-20, 7-11).
Long Island 96, Quinnipiac 90 — Jamal Olasewere scored 33 points and C.J. Garner added 30 as the host Blackbirds (17-13, 12-6 Northeast) slipped past the Bobcats.
Dave Johnson and Ousmane Drame combined for 45 points for Quinnipiac (15-15, 11-7).
Robert Morris 81, Central Conn. 61 — Matt Hunter netted 17 points but it wasn’t enough as the host Blue Devils (13-16, 9-9 Northeast) got routed by the Colonials (22-9, 14-4).
NCAA Division 3 first round — Peter Lynch scored 17 points as host Middlebury held off a second-half rally en route to a 68-66 win against Curry (21-7). The Panthers (22-3) advance to play Cortland State, which recorded a 85-59 win over Elms (18-10) . . . Rhode Island College (26-3) beat visiting Hobart, 62-59, behind 25 combined points from Tom DeCiantis and Tahrike Carter. R.I. College advances to play Morrisville State . . .
