UMass guard Derrick Gordon came out as gay in an interview with ESPN Wednesday, joining Nets center Jason Collins and NFL Draft hopeful Michael Sam as athletes who have come out in recent months.

Gordon, who is believed to be the first active men’s Division 1 college basketball player to come out, told his teammates on April 2, according to an ESPN story.“A bunch of weight has just been lifted off my shoulders,” Gordon told ESPN. Gordon scored 9.4 points per game for UMass last season and is expected to return for his junior season.

Gordon took to Instagram Wednesday to express his relief that the news was out.
