Barea scores 33, gets NU past Maine

Jose Juan Barea scored 21 of his game-high 33 points in the second half and Northeastern held off a late surge by Maine and picked up an 82-79 win last night in Orono, Maine.

Barea hit seven of 14 three-pointers for the Huskies (12-8, 6-3 America East), but Maine (11-7, 5-4) erased an 11-point deficit with a 17-6 run late in the game to pull even with 1:28 to go. But Barea's tough layup in traffic, followed by a free throw on Northeastern's next possession, gave the Huskies a 3-point lead.

Mark Flavin scored 18 points to lead four Black Bears in double figures, including 13 in the second half.Wisconsin 69, Ohio St. 57 -- Devin Harris made five of seven 3-pointers and scored 29 to keep the No. 17 Badgers (14-3, 5-1) atop the Big Ten with a win over the host Buckeyes (9-10, 1-5). After the game, three Ohio State assistant coaches confronted a high school kid who held up a sign that read, "The Wrong Jim O'Brien Resigned," referring to Tuesday's resignation of the Boston Celtics coach.

"He can do what he wants," O'Brien, the former Boston College coach, said of the fan. "But I'll tell you what he's not going to do -- he's not going to put the sign right up in my face."

Temple 76, St. Bonaventure 57 -- Temple coach John Chaney won his 700th career game when the Owls beat the visiting Bonnies behind David Hawkins's 21 points.

Chaney is 700-278 in 32 seasons as coach at Division 2 Cheyney State and Temple. He is 475-219 in 22 seasons with the Owls.

The 2001 Hall of Fame inductee joins Bob Knight, Lou Henson, Eddie Sutton, and Lute Olson as the only active Division 1 coaches with 700 victories and is the 21st coach overall to win that many games.

BU 66, Stony Brook 56 -- Shaun Wynn scored 15 points to lead the visiting Terriers past the Seawolves.

Chaz Carr and Kevin Fitzgerald each added 10 points for the Terriers (14-4, 8-1 America East), who have won three straight and 13 of 14. Cori Spencer scored 19 points for the Seawolves (6-12, 3-6).

Vermont 53, Albany 48 -- Taylor Coppenrath scored 17 points and the Catamounts extended their winning streak to nine by beating the host Great Danes.Scotty Jones scored 12 points for UVM (12-5, 8-0 America East), which has won 12 of 13.

Hartford 85, UNH 55 -- The Hawks (4-4, 9-8 America East) built a 22-point halftime lead and pounded the host Wildcats (5-14, 1-8). Damione Liddell scored 10 points for UNH.

UConn 96, Virginia Tech 60 -- Rashad Anderson hit six 3-pointers and scored a career-high 26 points and Ben Gordon added 22, leading the No. 6 Huskies (16-3, 4-1 Big East) past the Hokies in Blacksburg, Va.

Bryant Matthews scored 25 points for Virginia Tech (8-9, 1-5), which was playing without suspended reserves Fabian Davis and Shawn Harris.

Louisville 64, Houston 48 -- Louisville didn't miss Rick Pitino in its first game without its ailing coach. With assistant Kevin Willard coaching, the fourth-ranked Cardinals beat the visiting Cougars for their 16th consecutive victory.

Sports information director Kenny Klein spoke to Pitino after the game and said Pitino hopes to fly back from Cleveland this morning and make it to Louisville's afternoon practice. Pitino received treatment at the Cleveland Clinic for an undisclosed ailment that's caused him pain for months. Kentucky 71, Mississippi 61 -- Erik Daniels scored a career-high 24 points to lift the No. 5 Wildcats (14-2, 4-1 SEC) past the visiting Rebels (10-7, 2-4).

Cincinnati 80, East Carolina 57 -- Tony Bobbitt made a pair of 3-pointers in a half-minute span to spark the No. 8 Bearcats (15-1, 6-1 Conference USA) over the visiting Pirates (8-8, 0-6).

Miss. State 82, Tennessee 60 -- Lawrence Roberts scored 20 points to help the No. 11 Bulldogs (17-1, 6-1 SEC) rout the Vols (10-6, 2-4).

Kansas 78, Kansas St. 70 -- Keith Langford scored 19 points to lead the No. 15 Jayhawks (13-3, 5-0 Big 12) over the visiting Wildcats (9-7, 1-4).<

b>N. Carolina 68, N.C. State 66 -- Raymond Felton scored 14 points and Rashad McCants added 13 to lift the No. 12 Tar Heels (13-4, 3-3 Atlantic Coast) past the Wolfpack (11-5, 4-2) in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Bentley 75, Stonehill 64 -- Tim Forbes scored 21 points to lead the host Falcons (11-8, 9-5 Northeast-10) past the Chieftains. Evan Pellerin led Stonehill (8-10, 4-10) with 21 points and 17 rebounds

BU 67, Stony Brook 66 -- Katie Terhune scored 24 points and hit two free throws with four seconds left to lift the host Terriers (9-7, 4-3 America East) past the Seawolves (2-14, 1-6).

Maine 72, Northeastern 55 -- Melissa Heon scored 18 points as the visiting Black Bears (12-6, 7-0) stayed unbeaten in the America East with a rout of the Huskies (9-7, 3-4).

Vermont 51, Albany 44 -- Aaron Yantzi led four Catamounts (8-7, 2-5 America East) in double figures in the win over the visiting Great Danes (5-11, 2-6).

Texas 82, Nebraska 59 -- Freshman Tiffany Jackson had 22 points, and the third-ranked Longhorns (18-2, 6-1 Big 12) beat the No. 25 Cornhuskers (14-4, 4-3) in Lincoln, Neb.

Texas Tech 65, Texas A&M 56 -- Cisti Greenwalt matched a season-high with 19 points, and the seventh-ranked Lady Raiders (18-2, 4-2 Big 12) topped the host Aggies (7-11, 0-7).

Bentley 70, Stonehill 49 -- Becky Davison had 14 points and 12 rebounds and the host Falcons (14-5, 11-3 NE-10) pulled away to beat the Chieftains (14-5, 10-5).

Suffolk 79, Trinity 65 -- Allison Fox had 32 points and 13 rebounds to lead the host Rams (11-4) past the Bantams (8-7).
