Redick sets ACC record
Not even J.J. Redick's worst game of the season could derail No. 1 Duke.
Redick's 11 points were enough to set the Atlantic Coast Conference career scoring record, but it was Shelden Williams who took over inside with 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Blue Devils (27-1) to a 74-66 win over Temple yesterday in Philadelphia.
Redick needed just 9 points to pass Wake Forest's Dickie Hemric (1952-55) for the ACC mark, but the record-setting free throws didn't come until 1:28 remained in Duke's 10th straight win. Redick finished the game with 2,590 career points.
Memphis 78, Tulsa 67 -- The fourth-ranked Tigers (26-2, 12-0) rode 21 points by Shawne Williams to their 15th victory in a row and clinched at least a share of the Conference USA title.
Gonzaga 75, San Diego 59 -- With Adam Morrison held to a season-low 11 points, J.P. Batista picked up the slack by scoring 26 as the No. 5 Bulldogs (24-3, 13-0 West Coast) won their 37th straight at home.
Geo. Washington 78, Fordham 67 -- At New York, Maureece Rice scored 13 of his 19 points in the final seven minutes in leading the No. 6 Colonials (24-1, 14-0 Atlantic 10) to their 16th straight win.
Texas 80, Kansas 55 -- At Austin, Texas, LaMarcus Aldridge had 18 points as the No. 7 Longhorns (24-4, 12-2) rocked the 16th-ranked Jayhawks (20-7, 11-3) to inch closer to their first Big 12 title in seven years.
Illinois 71, Iowa 59 -- At Champaign, Ill., Rich McBride pumped in 15 points and the eighth-ranked
Pittsburgh 81, Providence 68 -- The No. 9 Panthers (21-4, 10-4 Big East) built a big early lead behind Aaron Gray (17 points) then held off a late surge by the Friars (12-13, 5-9) in Pittsburgh.
Arkansas 73, Tennessee 69 -- The 10th-ranked Vols (20-5, 11-3 SEC) were dealt their first home loss as Darian Townes rallied the Razorbacks (19-8, 8-6) with 15 points.
Ohio St. 64, Michigan 54 -- At Columbus, Ohio, Terence Dials notched 22 points and 11 rebounds to help the No. 13 Buckeyes (21-4, 10-4) stay atop the Big Ten.
NU 86, Towson 70 -- The visiting Huskies (17-10, 12-6 Colonial Athletic) rolled to their fourth straight win behind Shawn James (23 points, 11 rebounds, 6 blocks).
Princeton 75, Harvard 48 -- The Tigers (10-14, 8-3 Ivy) crushed the visiting Crimson (12-13, 4-8) with long-range shooting, connecting on 13 3-pointers -- five by Kyle Koncz (23 points) -- to Harvard's one.
Northeast-10 -- Chris Burns (24 points) buried 6 of 8 3-point attempts for host Bryant (20-8), which beat AIC, 61-54, to reach the quarterfinals . . . Bobby Murgo sank five free throws in the final minute to help host Merrimack finish off Franklin Pierce, 63-60 . . . Southern New Hampshire defeated visiting Pace, 83-70, with Sam Carey scoring 15 of his 21 points in the second half . . . Host Saint Rose (19-9) beat Le Moyne, 64-57, behind Will Monica's 18 points.
NESCAC -- Host Amherst (24-2) reached the title game for the sixth straight year by trouncing Bates, 86-66. John Bedford led the Jeffs with 21 points . . . Tufts pulled out an 88-75 overtime victory over Trinity in Amherst as David Shepherd (22 points, 11 rebounds) and Jake Weitzen (21 and 10) both had double-doubles.
Little East -- Amigo Paniagua had 19 points and UMass-Boston (18-10) earned its first NCAA automatic bid since 1983 by virtue of its 81-67 win over host Keene State.
MASCAC -- Derek Thompson and Cliff Furtado each had 14 points as Bridgewater State beat Worcester State, 59-46, in Westfield to earn an invite to the NCAAs.
NEWMAC -- WPI built a 32-point halftime lead and topped Wheaton, 81-67, in a semifinal in Worcester. Antoine Coleman had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Engineers (21-3) . . . Mike D'Auria paced MIT (20-7) with 17 points and the Engineers advanced to the title game in Worcester by ousting Coast Guard, 69-57.
