Mark Zoller had 22 points, 17 rebounds, and 6 assists, leading Pennsylvania to an 86-58 pounding of Yale last night in Philadelphia as the Quakers claimed their third straight Ivy League championship and became the first team to secure an NCAA Tournament berth.
Ibrahim Jaaber had 13 points and seven assists, and Steve Danley 11 points for the Quakers (20-8, 11-1), who won their eighth straight game and claimed the Ivy title for the fourth time in five years.
"We had to treat this like a championship game, and we had confidence in ourselves," Zoller said.
Eric Flato and Ross Morin each had 11 points for the Bulldogs (13-13, 9-4), which dealt Penn its only Ivy League loss, 77-68, Feb. 3.
The Quakers hit seven of their first eight shots and opened the game with a 24-2 run. Zoller hit a 3-pointer to give Penn a 31-9 lead midway through the first half.
The title is the Quakers' first under coach Glen Miller, who this season replaced longtime Penn coach Fran Dunphy, who now coaches crosstown rival Temple.
Harvard 85, Cornell 79 -- Jim Goffredo scored 32 points to lead the visiting Crimson.
Drew Housman scored 17 and Brad Unger added 11 points for Harvard. Ryan Wittman scored 24 points to lead Cornell.
Brown 64, Princeton 55 -- Damon Huffman led all scorers with 21 points as the Bears tamed the Tigers in Princeton, N.J.
Brown, which lost the first 52 games it played at Princeton, has won three of the last five in Jadwin Gym. The Tigers will finish in last place in the Ivy for the first time in their history.
Columbia 69, Dartmouth 67 -- John Baumann scored 19 points and the Lions held on for a victory over the Big Green in New York. Leon Pattman led Dartmouth with 22 points.
Missouri Valley tournament -- Jamaal Tatum and Matt Shaw scored 19 points apiece as No. 11 Southern Illinois won its 12th in a row, 71-59, over Drake in the quarterfinals at St. Louis.
Ohio Valley tournament -- Fernandez Lockett scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as No. 1 seed Austin Peay fought off pesky Samford, 65-55, in Nashville to advance to the final . . . Mike Rose made a pair of free throws with 4.9 seconds left to help Eastern Kentucky hold off Tennessee Tech, 57-54, for a berth in tonight's final.
Southern Conference tournament -- At North Charleston, S.C., Stephen Curry scored 30 points and broke the NCAA freshman record for 3-pointers to lead Davidson to its record 28th victory, beating Furman, 92-68, in the semifinals.
Curry finished with six threes, giving him 113, three better than former NCAA scoring champ Keydren Clark had his first season at St. Peter's.
NCAA Division 3 -- Steve DeLuca scored 24 points and Brandeis outscored Trinity, 21-14, in overtime as the Judges earned a 77-70 victory in Providence . . . Kinsey Durgin had a game-high 18 points to lead host Rhode Island College to a 64-60 win over Coast Guard . . . Brandon Williams led five players in double figures with 16 points as Brockport State eliminated Williams, 74-66, at Canton, N.Y. Chris Rose led the Ephmen with a game-high 17 points . . . David Williams's 23 points carried host Saint Lawrence to an 85-79 win over Elms . . . Chris Baltz pumped in a career-high 27 points as host Saint John Fisher waxed Wentworth, 98-72 . . . ECAC Division 3 -- Jim Bayne pumped in 21 points and Deon Thomas chipped in 12 as Western New England College thumped Endicott, 74-57, in Springfield . . .
