Smallwood sparks NU over Patriots

Shaleyese Smallwood scored a game-high 26 points to lift Northeastern to its third win in four games by beating visiting George Mason, 65-56, last night. Kendra Walton scored 15 points and added 10 rebounds for the Huskies, who connected on 27 of 31 free throw attempts.

The Patriots were held to 35.5 percent shooting from the field, and the Huskies outrebounded George Mason, 42-35.

Smallwood was the star for Northeastern for the fourth straight game, scoring 18 points in the first half and going 8 for 8 from the line in the second half.

Northeastern took a 31-22 halftime lead, but the Patriots rallied in the second half to cut the deficit to 4 points four times before the Huskies pulled away. Northeastern improved to 9-15, 4-10 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Patriots, led by Rashauna Hobbs with 10 points, fell to 9-16 and 3-11.

Florida St. 71, Boston College 65 - Stefanie Murphy scored 24 points and had nine rebounds but the Eagles couldn't overcome an injury to Brittanny Johnson and foul trouble for four starters in falling to the Seminoles in Tallahassee, Fla. Florida State, which improved to 16-10, 6-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, was led by Tania Davis-Cain, who had 20 points, 16 in the first half. BC fell to 18-9, 6-6.

North Carolina 79, Miami 61 - Erlana Larkins scored 18 points to lead the No. 2 Tar Heels (25-2, 12-0 ACC) over the Hurricanes (9-17, 2-9) in Coral Gables, Fla. Maurita Reid scored 18 points to lead Miami.

Tennessee 85, Alabama 58 - Candace Parker scored 19 points to help lead the No. 3 Lady Vols (24-2, 10-1 Southeastern Conference) over the Crimson Tide (8-19, 1-11) in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

LSU 52, Kentucky 48 - Sylvia Fowles had 14 points and 10 rebounds to help the Lady Tigers (23-3, 12-0 SEC) extend their winning streak to 14 games with a victory over the Wildcats (13-13, 7-5) in Baton Rouge, La.

Old Dominion 87, VCU 67 - Jasmine Parker scored 16 points and the No. 10 Lady Monarchs (23-3, 14-0) stayed on track for their first perfect season in the Colonial Athletic Association in seven years, beating the Rams (19-6, 9-5) in Richmond.

Ohio St. 69, Iowa 56 - Ashlee Trebilcock and Jantel Lavender each scored 18 points to lead the No. 20 Buckeyes (20-6, 11-4) past the Hawkeyes (18-9, 11-5) in Columbus, Ohio, drawing them closer to their fourth straight Big Ten title. Marscilla Packer added 12 points for Ohio State.

Vanderbilt 60, Arkansas 53 - Jessica Mooney scored 14 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead the No. 25 Commodores (20-7, 9-3 SEC) over the Lady Razorbacks (19-9, 2-9) in Fayetteville, Ark.

Suffolk 66, St. Joseph (Conn.) 49 - Christie Iwanicki had 12 points, 6 assists, and 5 steals to help the host Rams clinch a home-court berth in the league playoffs with a Great Northeast Athletic Conference victory over the Blue Jays (4-19, 1-11). The Rams (17-7, 10-2) scored 11 of the last 12 points in the first half to take a 27-18 lead.

UCLA 84, Oregon St. 49
- Russell Westbrook scored 17 points, Darren Collison had 14 points and nine assists, and the No. 6 Bruins (23-3, 11-2) routed the Beavers (6-20, 0-14) in Los Angeles to assume a one-game lead in the Pac-10.

Xavier 75, Duquesne 48 - Derrick Brown and C.J. Anderson had double-doubles in a balanced offense that hardly missed injured point guard Drew Lavender, and the No. 10 Musketeers (23-4, 11-1) rolled over the Dukes (16-9, 6-6) in Cincinnati to solidify their hold on first place in the Atlantic 10.

Washington St. 59, Arizona St. 47 - Derrick Low scored 15 points and the No. 17 Cougars (21-5, 9-5) relied on the Pac-10's best defense to shut down the Sun Devils (16-9, 6-7) in Pullman, Wash.

Notre Dame 82, Pittsburgh 70 - Luke Harangody had 23 points and 12 rebounds, Tory Jackson added 16 points and 13 rebounds, and the No. 21 Fighting Irish (20-5, 10-3 Big East) overcame an 11-point deficit in the second half to beat the Panthers (19-7, 7-6) in South Bend, Ind.

Newbury 100, Daniel Webster 97 - Steve Morris answered Chris Hanson's tying free throws in overtime with a 75-foot miracle shot as the buzzer sounded to hand the visiting Nighthawks (17-7) a stunning victory over the Eagles (7-17) in Nashua. Kevin Cleveland scored 28 points and added 12 rebounds for Newbury.

Albertus Magnus 80, Mitchell 64 - Eric Murray scored his 1,000th career point in only his 52d collegiate game, but the Pequots fell to the visiting Falcons in New London, Conn. Murray finished with 19 points in the final regular-season game for Mitchell (3-22). The Falcons (4-20) were led by Bobby Leonzo, who had 22 points and 13 rebounds and finished needing just 6 points for 1,000 in his career.

Westfield St. 91, Framingham St. 69 - Ryan Maur's 26 points lifted the Owls, who outscored the Rams, 54-31, in the second half, to the rout in Westfield. Westfield improved to 17-7, 7-4 in the MASCAC, while Framingham fell to 12-13, 7-5. Royce Veal led the Rams with 16 points.
