Welsh fired by Providence

After 10 years at the helm and his third losing season in the last four, men's basketball coach Tim Welsh was fired yesterday by Providence College.

"I appreciate all the hard work and dedication that Tim has put in this program over the last 10 years," athletic director Bob Driscoll said in a statement. "He has represented the college with dignity and class. However, I felt it was in the best interest of the program and Providence College to make a change in leadership."

Welsh, who was hired April 2, 1998, led the Friars to only two NCAA Tournament appearances and a 1-9 record in the Big East tournament. This year's team, which Welsh felt had a chance for postseason success, finished 15-16, losing Wednesday to West Virginia in the first round of the conference tournament.

Welsh's record at Providence was 160-143, 72-92 in the Big East. Brown coach Craig Robinson, Ohio University coach Tim O'Shea, and George Mason coach Jim Larranaga are likely candidates to replace Welsh.
