Boston College announced that sophomores Shamari Spears, a forward, and Daye Kaba, a guard, have been granted releases from their scholarships and will transfer.
The 6-foot-6-inch Spears played in 28 games for the Eagles last season, starting 17, but was in and out of coach Al Skinner's doghouse during the tail end of a campaign that did not include a postseason appearance for the first time since 1999-2000.
Spears averaged 9.6 points and 6.1 rebounds for the Eagles, who finished 14-17, 4-12 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, before losing to Clemson in the second round of the league tournament.
Spears could wind up at Charlotte as he seeks more playing time closer to his home in North Carolina.
Kaba, who like Spears is seeking more playing time, appeared in seven games last season for a total of 17 minutes.
The Eagles had three scholarships available for next season, but committed early to Dallas Elmore, a 6-4 shooting forward, and 6-3 guard Reggie Jackson, who played together on a Colorado AAU team, and 6-7 forward Evan Ravenel of Brandon, Fla.
Forward Joe Trapani, who sat out last season after transferring from Vermont, will be eligible next season as well.
With the additional scholarships, the Eagles are likely to focus on finding more size and they are concentrating on 6-11 Maurice Sutton from Largo (Md.) High School.
He visited BC last week but has also drawn interest from Marquette, Kentucky, and North Carolina.![]()
