Friars surprised by Huskies

Matt Janning scored 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting and Keno Davis was denied a win in his Providence debut as visiting Northeastern beat the Friars, 70-66, last night.

Eugene Spates added 17 points for Northeastern (2-1), which handed Providence its first season-opening loss since 1999.

Poor shooting plagued Providence early as Northeastern erased an 8-point deficit to take a 1-point lead into halftime. Janning came out firing in the second half with 7 points in less than five minutes to put his team up by 11 points midway through the half.

Providence stormed back to tie the game with a little more than two minutes remaining on Brian Mackenzie's three straight 3-pointers, but clutch Huskies shooting down the stretch ultimately did in the Friars.

George Mason 80, Vermont 79 - Darryl Monroe hit two free throws with 0.7 seconds left in overtime to lift the Patriots at Burlington, Vt.

The Catamounts grabbed the lead, 79-78, on a layup by Mike Trimboli with 1:13 to go in overtime and Vermont got the ball back, but a five-second violation gave George Mason another chance.

North Carolina 86, Penn 71 - Freshman Tyler Zeller scored 18 points to help the top-ranked Tar Heels triumph in Chapel Hill, N.C., despite playing without reigning national player of the year Tyler Hansbrough.

Gonzaga 83, Montana St.-Billings 52 - Austin Daye and Josh Heytvelt scored 15 points apiece and the No. 10 Bulldogs cruised past the Division 2 Yellowjackets in Spokane, Wash.

Memphis 90, Fairfield 63 - Freshman Tyreke Evans scored 19 points and the No. 13 Tigers pounded the Stags in the opening round of the Puerto Rico Tip-off Tournament in San Juan.

Tennessee 114, Chattanooga 75 - Tyler Smith had 23 points and five assists and the No. 14 Vols had an easy time with the Mocs in Knoxville, Tenn.

Miami 96, Florida Southern 60 - Dwyane Collins had 18 points and a career-high 16 rebounds to help the No. 17 Hurricanes open their season with a rout in Coral Gables, Fla.

Southern Cal 78, UC Irvine 55 - Taj Gibson scored 17 points, including 6 straight in a decisive second-half run, and the 18th-ranked Trojans rolled at home.

Maine 60, Kennesaw St. 47 - Mark Socoby had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Troy Barnies added 16 points on 8-of-8 shooting to help the Black Bears knock off the Owls in the 100 Club Classic in Kennesaw, Ga.

Army 63, Dartmouth 48 - Nathan Hedgecock scored 15 points and Cleveland Richard added 11 as the Black Knights opened with a victory over the visiting Big Green.

Tennessee 68, San Francisco 39
- Freshman Glory Johnson had 17 points and 12 rebounds to power the defending national champion Lady Vols in Knoxville, Tenn.

Oklahoma 88, UC-Riverside 57 - All-America center Courtney Paris scored 16 points to move past Molly McGuire into second place on Oklahoma's career scoring list and the fourth-ranked Sooners opened their season with a home victory in the Preseason National Invitation Tournament.

Loyola (Md.) 78, Harvard 69 - Kaitlin Grant had 21 points for the Greyhounds in the first round of the USF Shootout in Tampa. Emily Tay led the Crimson with 16 points.

Yale 65, Holy Cross 63 - Melissa Colborn had 14 points as the Bulldogs held off the host Crusaders.

Men's soccer

BU 1, Binghamton 0 - Senior forward Jin Oh came off the bench to score in the 80th minute as the Terriers (11-5-3) beat the visiting Bearcats to claim the America East championship.

R.I. College 0, Babson 0 - Ryan Kelly, Bruno Costa, and Josh Silva scored shootout goals as the Anchormen outdueled the Beavers, 3-1, on penalty kicks to advance in the NCAA Division 3 tournament at Wellesley.

Middlebury 0, Framingham St. 0 - Despite a 25-4 shot advantage in regulation and overtime, the Panthers had to resort to penalty kicks to beat the Rams, 4-1, in a Division 3 tournament game at Middlebury, Vt.

Norwich 1, Clark 0 - Rob Harlow blasted home a shot in the 52d minute, allowing the Cadets to advance in the Division 3 tourney.

Amherst 0, WNEC 0 - In another Division 3 game, Joe Addison's penalty kick gave the host Lord Jeffs a 5-4 shootout victory.

Field hockey

Syracuse 3, UMass 2 - Shannon Taylor had two goals to help the host Orange (21-1) oust the Minutewomen in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Cher King and Katelyn Orlando scored for UMass (17-5).

Tufts 4, Springfield 0 - Tamara Brown had a goal and an assist to send the host Jumbos (17-1) to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division 3 tournament.
