Crusaders soar by the Hawks in OT

Holy Cross usually has to work hard to stick with the big boys of the college basketball world. Yesterday, the Crusaders had to work overtime - and boy did it pay off.
Holy Cross went on a 7-0 run in overtime and hung on for a 73-69 win over perennial Atlantic 10 power Saint Joseph's yesterday in Worcester. Junior Adam May led the Crusaders with 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists and senior Alex Vander Baan chipped in with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Hawks led, 51-39, with 10 minutes left before the Crusaders went on a 14-1 run with May capping the surge with a 3-pointer. Holy Cross led, 63-61, before Tasheed Carr's layup in the closing seconds forced overtime.
Ahmad Nivins led the Hawks with 17 points and Carr had 16.
Duke 82, Rhode Island 79 - Kyle Singler hit two free throws with 19.4 seconds left to help the eighth-ranked Blue Devils rally past the Rams for their NCAA-best 62d straight nonconference victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Jon Scheyer scored 23 points, and Singler finished with 21 points for the Blue Devils (3-0), twice hitting a pair of foul shots in the final minute to put the Blue Devils up by 1.
His last free throws made it 80-79 before Rhode Island called timeout with 10.6 seconds left. The Rams worked the ball to Jimmy Baron, and with Singler in his face, his fallaway jumper glanced off the rim, clipped a Rams player and went out of bounds with 4.9 seconds on the clock.
Jon Scheyer made two free throws with 3.7 seconds left, and Baron's halfcourt heave hit the glass as time expired to seal the win.
Baron scored 24 points and matched a career-high with eight 3-pointers for Rhode Island (1-1).
Michigan St. 100, Idaho 62 - Chris Allen scored a career-high 21 as the sixth-ranked Spartans routed the Vandals at East Lansing, Mich.
Florida 81, Bradley 58 - Forward Dan Werner and guard Walter Hodge each scored 17 points to lead the 19th-ranked Gators to an easy win over the Braves at Gainesville, Fla.
Notre Dame 94, S.C. Upstate 58 - Luke Harangody had 30 points and 14 rebounds to lead the ninth-ranked Fighting Irish to a season-opening victory over the Spartans at South Bend, Ind.
Harangody sparked a 15-2 run that broke the game open, scoring a fast-break basket late in the first half even though Upstate's Chalmers Rogers had a hand on his neck trying to stop him. Harangody then made a free throw to cap the 3-point play.
Wisconsin 68, Long Beach St. 61 - Marcus Landry scored 23 points and the No. 25 Badgers held on for a 68-61 victory over the 49ers at Madison, Wis.
Kansas 71, Missouri-Kansas City 56 - Sherron Collins had 16 points, Markieff Morris grabbed 15 rebounds and the No. 24 Jayhawks opened their national title defense by cruising past the Kangaroos at Lawrence, Kan
Women's basketball
UMass 71, Manhattan 68 - Sakera Young sank a free throw with two seconds remaining to cap a furious second-half comeback as the Minutewomen won their home opener by edging the Lady Jaspers.
UMass fell behind by as many as 24 points in the first half before storming back. Trailing, 44-25, at the half, UMass outscored Manhattan, 46-24, over the final 20 minutes.
UMass guard Stefanie Gerardot led all scorers with 24 points and Young added 10.
Harvard 70, Central Conn. 63 - Emma Markely netted a career-high 27 points and added 12 rebounds as the Crimson edged the Blue Devils in the consolation game of the USF Shootout at Tampa. South Florida won the title with a 94-46 win over Loyola (Md.).
UConn 82, Georgia Tech 71 - Maya Moore collected 20 points and 14 rebounds to power the top-ranked Huskies past the Yellow Jackets at Storrs, Conn.
It was the sophomore's 12th double double and the 37th time she's scored in double figures in her 39 games.
Renee Montgomery and Tina Charles each added 15 points for the Huskies, who won their 13th straight season opener. The victory also extended the Huskies' regular-season winning streak to 25 games.
Baylor 81, Stanford 65 - Rachel Allison scored 20 of her 25 points in the first half and Jhasmin Player added 14 to help the No. 19 Bears beat the second-ranked Cardinal at Waco, Texas.
Allison hit 7 of 9 shots in the first half and finished 3 points short of her career-high.
Maryland 73, Delaware St. 46 - At College Park, Md., Marah Strickland scored 14 points and the third-ranked Terrapins rebounded from a stunning opening-game loss to Texas Christian to beat the Hornets.
North Carolina 77, Va. Commonwealth 65 - Rashanda McCants scored 15 points as the No. 6 Tar Heels dunked the Rams at Chapel Hill, N.C., in the second round of the Preseason National Invitation Tournament.
Duke 98, Maine 31 - Chante Black's game-high 16 points carried the eighth-ranked Blue Devils to victory at Durham, N.C.
California 67, Nevada 53 - Ashley Walker scored 27 points to surpass the 1,500 mark for her career and also grabbed 17 rebounds, leading the No. 9 Bears past the Wolf Pack at Berkeley, Calif.
Texas A&M 56, Pittsburgh 50 - Tyra White scored 13 points to help the No. 11 Aggies top the Panthers at the State Farm Tip-Off Classic at Baton Rouge, La.
Shavonte Zellous scored 23 points to lead Pittsburgh (0-1). She was just 3 for 16 from the field, but was 14 for 16 from the free throw line.
Quinnipiac 79, Brown 62 - At Providence, Erin Kerner pumped in 25 points to propel the Bobcats past the Bears.
Men's hockey
Vermont 2, Merrimack 1 - Mike Spillane stopped 24 shots and Josh Burrows and Brian Roloff scored goals as the Catamounts doubled up the Warriors at Burlington, Vt.
Canisius 3, UConn 2 - Freshman Dave Kostuch connected 49 seconds into overtime as the Griffs knocked off the Huskies in Buffalo.
Women's hockey
Maine 5, BC 3 - Amy Stech scored a pair of goals as the Black Bears overcame Kelli Stack's hat trick to post the win at Orono, Maine.
Providence 2, UConn 0 - Freshman Genevieve Lacasse stopped 30 shots and Alyse Ruff scored the deciding goal as the Friars blanked the Huskies in Providence.![]()
