Michigan uses late burst to upset No. 4 UCLA
DeShawn Sims scored 18 points and Manny Harris added 15 to help Michigan upset fourth-ranked UCLA, 55-52, last night in the semifinals of the 2K Sports Classic in New York.
The Wolverines will face No. 10 Duke in the championship game tonight at Madison Square Garden.
With Michigan (3-0) trailing, 48-46, with 4:16 left, Stu Douglass hit a long go-ahead 3-pointer. UCLA's Darren Collison was stripped on the other end, leading to a layup by Sims that made it 51-48.
The Bruins (2-1) cut the deficit to 2 when Josh Shipp made one of two free throws with 56 seconds left. After Michigan worked the shot clock down, Anthony Wright found Sims on a backdoor cut for a two-handed dunk that gave the Wolverines a 4-point lead with 28 seconds remaining.
UCLA's Nikola Dragovic hit a 3-pointer with five seconds to go to cut it to 53-52, but Harris hit two free throws and blocked Collison's potential tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Duke 83, Southern Illinois 58 - Gerald Henderson scored all 20 of his points in the second half, helping the 10th-ranked Blue Devils (4-0) put away the Salukis in New York.
Southern Illinois (2-1) pulled to 55-47 with 9 1/2 minutes left before Kyle Singler hit a 3-pointer. A couple of minutes later, Singler (13 points) was intentionally fouled on a breakaway dunk, then added a pair of free throws.
Memphis 83, Chattanooga 71 - Doneal Mack shot 5 of 9 from 3-point range and finished with 19 points for the No. 13 Tigers (3-0) in the first round of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off in San Juan.
Shawn Taggart collected 16 points and 11 rebounds for Memphis, and the Tigers shot 51.7 percent (30 of 58) from the field to put away the Mocs (0-3).
Seton Hall 63, Southern Cal 61 - Jeremy Hazell scored 17 points, Eugene Harvey added 16, and the Pirates overcame a 15-point halftime deficit in San Juan to beat the No. 19 Trojans and advance to face Memphis.
Harvey missed a free throw with five seconds left to keep it a 2-point game, but Daniel Hackett missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer for USC (2-1).
Florida 64, Southern Utah 50 - The No. 18 Gators (3-0) shot just 1 of 16 from 3-point range, but still prevailed in Gainesville, Fla., behind 18 points and seven rebounds from Nick Calathes.
Dan Werner made the only three for Florida, and it came with 22.1 seconds to play.
Virginia Tech 74, Fairfield 57 - In the opening game in San Juan, Puerto Rico native A.D. Vassallo scored 24 points and the Hokies (3-0) blew past the Stags (1-2) after halftime.
The Stags will take on Missouri (2-1) next in the losers' bracket, while Virginia Tech advanced to meet Xavier (3-0), which beat Missouri, 75-71.
Providence 111, Sacred Heart 87 - The host Friars (2-1) reached triple digits for the second straight game, getting 30 points and five steals from Marshon Brooks.
URI 85, Monmouth 62 - At West Long Branch, N.J., the Rams (2-1) opened the game with an 8-0 run and cruised past the Hawks (0-3). Ten players scored for URI, led by Keith Cothran's 18 points.
Penn St. 89, Hartford 64 - The Nittany Lions (2-0) tied a school record with 15 3-pointers (in 25 attempts), including six by Stanley Pringle (23 points) in a home win over the Hawks (0-3).
Texas Tech 167, East Central 115 - In Lubbock, Texas, Trevor Cook scored 20 and was one of 10 players in double figures for the Red Raiders, who shattered the school record (128) for points.
Emerson 100, Wheaton 97 - Brian
UNew England 91, Wentworth 90 - Marchale Robinson came off the bench to score 20 points and the Nor'easters (1-1) outlasted the Leopards (1-3) in Boston.

Harvard 73, Holy Cross 57 - Niki Finelli scored 8 of her team-high 15 points during a game-opening 15-2 run by the Crimson in Worcester.
Claire Wheeler contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds for Harvard (2-1). Briana McFadden and Tayana Carper had 10 points apiece to lead the Crusaders (0-3).
BC 71, Hofstra 60 - The host Eagles (3-0) had it easy, holding the Pride (0-2) to 18 first-half points. BC had three players in double figures: Mickel Picco and Ayla Brown, 16, and Carolyn Swords, 14.
BU 84, Siena 61 - The host Terriers (2-0) stormed to a 17-point halftime lead and blew past the Saints (0-3) behind 20 points from Jesyka Burks-Wiley.
Central Conn. 65, Maine 57 - Shontice Simmons was the lone player in double figures for the host Blue Devils (1-2) with 15 points, while Kristin Baker carried the Black Bears (0-2) with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
UConn 99, San Diego St. 55 - Maya Moore's 21 points paced five players in double figures, and the No. 1 Huskies (2-0) shot 64 percent from the field in Hartford to beat an unranked opponent for the 89th straight time.
Stanford 84, New Mexico 46 - Jillian Harmon led the No. 8 Cardinal (2-1) with 13 points and five players reached double figures for the hosts.
Maryland 90, James Madison 76 - Kristi Toliver made three layups and two free throws during a pivotal 18-3 run for the No. 11 Terrapins (2-1), and totaled 27 points in College Park, Md.
