Pitt answers skeptics with romp over Hoyas

Fourteen games into the season, No. 3 Pittsburgh took its first major test and passed it with plenty to spare - thanks to the inside muscle of DeJuan Blair.
Blair had 20 points and 17 rebounds to win his duel with Georgetown standout freshman Greg Monroe, and the No. 3 Panthers never trailed in yesterday's 70-54 win over the No. 11 Hoyas, ending Georgetown's 29-game home winning streak.
In a rematch of the last two Big East tournament championship games, Pittsburgh (14-0, 2-0) broke open a close contest with a 17-4 run midway through the second half. They dominated the Hoyas on the boards (46-21), in the paint (48-22), and with their depth (14-2 bench scoring).
DaJuan Summers scored 22 points to lead Georgetown, keeping his team in the game in the first half. Monroe added 15 points for the Hoyas (10-2, 1-1), who were dealt a sobering reality check five days after their road upset of No. 2 Connecticut.
The Panthers didn't face a ranked team while winning their first 13 games and had to overcome a 7-point second-half deficit to beat Rutgers Wednesday, but any doubts over a soft schedule were put to rest.
Blair set the tone early in both halves. He won the opening tip, scored the game's first points with a half-hook, then picked off a pass and made the score 4-0 with a layup. In the second half, he scored Pitt's first 7 points.
UConn 80, Rutgers 49 - Hasheem Thabeet led a balanced attack with 15 points and eight rebounds, and the second-ranked Huskies snapped back from their first loss with a rout of the Scarlet Knights in Storrs, Conn.
Jerome Dyson added 14 points and Jeff Adrien had 13 for UConn (12-1, 1-1 Big East). The loss was the third in a row to a highly ranked team for Rutgers (9-6, 0-2), which was beaten last Sunday by No. 1 North Carolina and lost Wednesday to No. 3 Pittsburgh.
UConn coach Jim Calhoun missed the second half with an illness, but still moved into a tie with Lefty Driesell for seventh place on the NCAA career wins list with 786.
Wake Forest 94, BYU 87 - Jeff Teague scored 30 points and the No. 6 Demon Deacons (13-0) broke a tie with a late 8-0 run to beat the Cougars (11-2), ending the nation's longest home winning streak at 53, dating to the opener of the 2005-06 season.
