Adrien and UConn finish strong to overcome Mountaineers

Jeff Adrien scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half and Hasheem Thabeet provided 13 points and 13 rebounds as fifth-ranked Connecticut edged No. 25 West Virginia, 61-55, last night in Morgantown, W.Va.
Neither team led by more than 4 points until Thabeet's inside basket put the Huskies (13-1, 2-1 Big East) ahead, 52-47, with six minutes left. The Mountaineers (11-3, 1-1) managed just three field goals over the final eight minutes.
UConn coach Jim Calhoun moved past Lefty Driesell into seventh place on the NCAA career wins list with 787.
Arkansas 67, Texas 61 - A week after knocking off then-No. 4 Oklahoma, the host Razorbacks (12-1) dumped the seventh-ranked Longhorns (11-3). Michael Washington had 22 points, including a clinching dunk with 22.5 seconds left.
Michigan St. 67, Ohio St. 58 - Kalin Lucas scored 20 points as the No. 8 Spartans (12-2, 3-0 Big Ten) won their eighth straight. The visiting Buckeyes (10-3, 1-2) have lost three of four.
Clemson 66, Alabama 59 - Trevor Booker had 19 points and the No. 12 Tigers (15-0) finished off the visiting Crimson Tide (10-4) with a late 14-0 run.
Penn St. 67, Purdue 64 - The Nittany Lions (13-3, 2-1 Big Ten) got 21 points from Talor Battle and beat the No. 14 Boilermakers (11-4, 0-2) at home after blowing an early 15-point lead.
Villanova 89, Seton Hall 85 - Scottie Reynolds matched his career high with 40 points and the No. 18 Wildcats (13-3, 1-1 Big East) made their last 18 free throws to beat the host Pirates (9-6, 0-3) in overtime.
URI 86, Toledo 77 - The Rams (11-4) outscored the host Rockets, 14-5, from the foul line, and Kahiem Seawright finished with 16 points.
Central Florida 70, Holy Cross 57 - Jermaine Taylor scored 21 of his 29 points in the second half to help the Knights (10-4) pull away from the Crusaders (5-10) in Orlando.
Virginia 74, Brown 50 - Mike Scott (15 points) and the Cavaliers (7-5) held the visiting Bears (5-8) to 35 percent from the field.
Fairfield 59, Army 54 - At West Point, N.Y., Greg Nero scored 23 points as the Stags (9-6) hung on.
Wesleyan 72, Amherst 69 - Jeremy Kaminer banked in a 30-footer at the buzzer to lift the Cardinals (4-6) over the Lord Jeffs (9-1), ranked fifth in Division 3, in Middletown, Conn.
Louisville 76, Seton Hall 47 - Angel McCoughtry's strong game (28 points, 13 rebounds) led the No. 10 Cardinals (15-1, 2-0 Big East) at home.
Notre Dame 86, DePaul 62 - The No. 12 Fighting Irish (13-1, 2-0 Big East) received 20 points from Erica Williamson in Chicago.
UNH 51, Maine 47 - Amy Simpson canned five 3-pointers among her 17 points and the Wildcats (3-11) tipped the Black Bears (2-12) in the teams' America East opener in Durham, N.H.
American 60, Brown 43 - The visiting Bears dropped to 1-12 as Nicole Ryan led the Eagles (10-5) with 21 points.
Tulsa 45, Ball St. 13 - In the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala., the Golden Hurricane (11-3) finished off the best season in school history as Tarrion Adams rushed for 207 yards and three touchdowns. The Cardinals (12-2) closed the season with two straight losses.
