Holland sparks BU over Maine

John Holland scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Boston University held back Maine, 76-65, last night at Case Gym.

Freshman Jeff Pelage set season highs with 10 points and 12 rebounds for BU (16-12, 12-5 America East), which will be the No. 3 seed at next week's conference tournament in Albany.

It was the first time in nine years two BU players had double-doubles in the same game.

The Terriers, beating Maine for the sixth straight time, never trailed and led by as many as 22 points.

Gerald McLemore led Maine (9-19, 4-11 and the No. 8 seed in the league tournament) with 16 points. Troy Barnies had 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Mark Socoby scored 11 points, including the 1,000th of his career.

Boston University's win was its 1,000th of its 100-year history.

Memphis 71, UAB 60 - Doneal Mack and Antonio Anderson hit consecutive 3-pointers to help spark a decisive run by the No. 5 Tigers (25-3, 13-0), who clinched their fourth consecutive Conference USA regular-season title with a victory over the Blazers (19-9, 9-4) in Birmingham, Ala.

Wake Forest 85, NC State 78 - James Johnson had career highs with 28 points and 18 rebounds to lead the No. 13 Demon Deacons (21-5, 8-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) past the Wolfpack (15-11, 5-8) in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Michigan 87, Purdue 78 - DeShawn Sims scored a career-high 29 points and Manny Harris had 27 points and eight rebounds to lead the Wolverines (18-11, 8-8 Big Ten) over the No. 16 Boilermakers (21-7, 10-5) in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Gonzaga 81, Santa Clara 73 - Josh Heytvelt scored a career-high 29 points and Matt Bouldin added 23, helping the No. 17 Bulldogs (22-5, 13-0) defeat the Broncos (14-16, 6-7) in Santa Clara, Calif., to stay unbeaten in the Western Conference.

Xavier 68, Saint Joseph's 54 - Derrick Brown had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and B.J Raymond scored 18 points to lead the No. 19 Musketeers (23-5, 11-3 Atlantic 10) past the Hawks (14-13, 7-6) in Philadelphia.

Illinois 52, Minnesota 41 - Mike Davis scored 14 points and Trent Meacham added 13 to lead the No. 20 Illini (23-6, 11-5 Big Ten) over the Gophers (20-8, 8-8) in Champaign, Ill.

Washington 73, Arizona State 70 - Jon Brockman scored on the first two possessions of overtime and finished with 21 points, and the No. 21 Huskies (21-7, 12-4) kept control of the Pac-10 race with a victory over the visiting No. 14 Sun Devils (21-6, 10-5).

UCLA 76, Stanford 71 - Josh Shipp hit four 3-pointers while scoring 24 points, and the No. 22 Bruins (21-7, 10-5) stayed in the race for their fourth consecutive Pac-10 title with a victory over the fading Cardinal (15-11, 4-11) in Stanford, Calif.

Butler 78, Youngstown St. 57 - Matt Howard had 25 points and 10 rebounds and the No. 24 Bulldogs (24-4, 14-3) beat the Penguins (11-17, 7-10), clinching at least a share of their third straight Horizon League regular-season championship.

Stony Brook 62, Hartford 40 - Muhammed El-Amin had a game-high 21 points to lead the Seawolves (16-12, 8-7 America East) over the Hawks (6-24, 2-13) in Hartford.

UNH 64, Albany 56 - Tyrece Gibbs and Radar Onguetou keyed a decisive 7-0 run that broke a late tie and the host Wildcats (12-15, 7-8 America East) defeated the Great Danes (14-14, 6-9).

UNC 90, Miami 76 - Cetera DeGraffenreid scored 23 points and the No. 9 Tar Heels (25-4, 10-3 ACC) beat the Hurricanes (13-15, 2-11) in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Ohio St. 75, Wisconsin 53 - Jantel Lavender had 21 points and 13 rebounds and Samantha Prahalis fueled the No. 14 Buckeyes' (23-5, 14-3 Big Ten) fast break to lead them past the Badgers (16-13, 6-12) in Columbus, Ohio.

LSU 63, Tennessee 61 - Katherine Graham made two free throws with 7.9 seconds remaining and the Tigers (16-9, 9-4 Southeastern Conference) slipped past the No. 18 Lady Vols (19-9, 8-5) in Baton Rouge, La.

Delaware 64, Northeastern 53 - Tesia Harris scored 17 points and Arlene Jenkins added 12 to lift the host Blue Hens (13-14, 5-11 Colonial Athletic Association) over the Huskies. Northeastern (10-17, 7-9) was led by Kim Carr's 14 points.
