Hartford tops Maine, advances in AE

Jaret von Rosenberg scored 21 points and ninth-seeded Hartford snapped a 14-game losing streak with a 65-56 win over No. 8 Maine last night in the America East tournament's first round at Albany, N.Y.

The Hawks, whose last win was over Maine Jan. 14, advanced to play No. 1 seed Binghamton today in the quarterfinals. The win raised Hartford's record to 7-25.

Maine lost for the 10th time in 11 games to finish the season 9-21.

Earlier, von Rosenberg was named third-team All-America East and grabbed a spot on the league's All-Academic team. He then led his team to its third win in 17 conference games and became the 22d player in Hartford's history to reach 1,000 career points with a key basket with 4:15 left.

Gerald McLemore led Maine with 13 points.

Cornell 83, Penn 58 - Ryan Wittman had 25 points, freshman guard Chris Wroblewski added 12 in just his seventh start, and the Big Red (20-9, 10-3) beat the Quakers (9-17, 5-7) in Ithaca, N.Y., to clinch the Ivy League title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year.

Yale 74, Dartmouth 62 - Travis Pinick scored 21 points and Ross Morin added 19 to lead the Bulldogs over the Big Green in New Haven.

Dartmouth (9-18, 7-6) led, 4-2, before the Bulldogs went on a 10-0 run to take the lead for good. Yale (13-14, 8-5 Ivy) added another 13-0 run later.

Brown 61, Harvard 59 - Garrett Leffelman hit a 3-pointer as time expired to lift the host Bears (9-17, 5-7) over the Crimson (13-14, 5-8).

Columbia 58, Princeton 44 - K.J. Matsui scored 17 points, hitting five 3-pointers, and the Lions (12-15, 7-6) eliminated the Tigers (12-13, 7-5) from the Ivy race.

MVC - Kwadzo Ahelegbe and Adam Koch scored 19 points apiece and top seed Northern Iowa (21-10) avoided a free throw meltdown in the final minute of a 73-69 victory over Indiana State (11-21) in the quarterfinals in St. Louis . . . Sam Maniscalco went 14 for 14 from the line and scored 21 points to lead Bradley (18-13) to a 67-55 win over Southern Illinois (13-18) . . . Booker Woodfox hit a 16-footer at the buzzer to help second-seeded Creighton (26-6) hold off No. 7 Wichita State (16-16), 63-62 . . . Champ Oguchi scored 20 points to lead third-seeded Illinois State (23-8) past No. 6 Evansville (17-13), 78-68.

MAAC - Greg Logins had 19 points and 13 rebounds as No. 9 seed Canisius (11-19, 5-14) defeated eighth-seeded Loyola (12-20, 7-12), 74-68, in Albany . . . Ryan Schneider scored 14 points to lead 10th-seeded Marist (10-22, 5-14) to a minor 43-40 upset of seventh-seeded Iona.

Ohio Valley - Kenneth Faried scored 22 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead Morehead State (18-15) to a 63-55 upset over top-seeded Tennessee-Martin (22-9) in Nashville . . . Drake Reed scored 18 points to lead Austin Peay (19-12) to a 67-50 victory over Murray State (19-12).

Atlantic Sun - Courtney Pigram scored 30 points and second-seeded East Tennessee State (22-10) beat Belmont, 88-74, in Nashville . . . Lehmon Colbert scored 20 points and Ben Smith added 19 as top-seeded Jacksonville (18-12) rolled to an 88-72 victory over Lipscomb (17-14).

NCAA Division 3 - Jerome Kirkland scored a game-high 15 points to lead WPI (21-5) over Husson (16-12), 86-57, in a first-round tournament game in Worcester . . . Mike Campbell and Erastus Shannon each scored 22 points to lift Farmingdale State (25-3) over the University of New England (24-5), 90-73, in Providence . . . Jimmy Bartolotta scored 10 of his game-high 27 points in overtime as MIT (21-8) advanced over Rhode Island College (23-6), 73-68.

Women
Big East - Takisha Granberry scored 19 points and West Virginia (17-13) beat Providence (10-20), 53-48, in Hartford . . . Kahla Roudebush scored 19 points and 16th-seeded Cincinnati (14-16) upset Marquette (16-15), 60-54, in overtime . . . Sky Lindsay hit a jump shot with under two seconds left to lift St. John's (17-13) over Syracuse (16-14), 63-61 . . . Ebonie Williams scored 15 points and 15th-seeded Seton Hall (17-13) upset 10th seed Georgetown, 70-45.

Big Ten - Jantel Lavender had 22 points and 11 rebounds, Brittany Johnson finished with 16 points, and No. 12 Ohio State (25-5) beat Illinois (10-21), 70-53, in Indianapolis.

SEC - DeWanna Bonner scored 32 points and became Auburn's career scoring leader with 2,084 points as the No. 6 Tigers (28-2) held on for a 71-65 victory over Mississippi (17-14) in North Little Rock, Ark. . . . Angie Bjorklund scored 25 points, and No. 19 Tennessee (22-9) beat No. 21 Florida (23-7), 71-67 . . . Christina Wirth scored 23 points and No. 22 Vanderbilt (22-8) committed just three turnovers in a 69-61 victory over Georgia (18-13).

MAAC - Rachele Fitz led five scorers in double figures with 15 points to pace top-seeded Marist (27-3) to an 81-27 dismantling of ninth-seeded Loyola (10-20) in Albany, N.Y. . . . Thazina Cook scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds as fifth-seeded Iona (18-12) topped fourth-seeded St. Peter's (13-15), 63-57 . . . Stephanie Geehan scored 12 points and added 8 rebounds and 7 blocks as third-seeded Fairfield (18-12) beat seventh-seeded Siena (10-18), 61-55, in overtime . . . Ellie Radke had 14 points and nine rebounds as second-seeded Canisius (23-7) blew out 10th-seeded Niagara (3-28), 71-46.

C-USA - Chelsie Wiley scored 26 points to lead Central Florida (15-16) to a 79-66 victory over fourth-seeded Houston (19-10) in New Orleans . . . Chantelle Handy hit an 18-foot jumper with three seconds left in overtime to give seventh-seeded Marshall (17-14) a 72-70 victory over second-seeded Texas-El Paso (18-12).

NE-10 - Johannah Leedham had 22 points and five rebounds as Franklin Pierce (22-5) defeated AIC (20-12), 55-50, and will play third-seeded Bentley in tomorrow's Division 2 conference title game in Rindge, N.H.

Atlantic 10 - Despite a combined 29 points from seniors Sakera Young (16 points) and Stefanie Garardot (13), UMass (12-18) was unable to hold off Duquesne (20-10), 72-51, in Charlotte, N.C.

NCAA Division 3 - Attanga McCormick had 17 points to lead four teammates in double figures as Amherst (26-2) rolled over Babson (20-9), 77-54, in their first-round game.

Harvard 81, Brown 57 - Emma Markley had 19 points and nine rebounds to lift the host Crimson (18-8, 10-2 Ivy) over the Bears (3-24, 1-12). Emily Tay added 14 for Harvard.
