Chaisson Allen did all he could last night, but he couldn't extend the season for the Northeastern men's basketball team.
Allen, a sophomore guard, scored a career-high 26 points and had a team-high seven rebounds, but the host University of Texas-El Paso beat the Huskies, 75-66, in a College Basketball Invitational quarterfinal.
NU finished the season with a 19-13 record, while UTEP improved to 21-12.
Stefon Jackson and Randy Culpepper combined for 47 points for the Miners, who will face Stanford in the semifinals. Jackson scored 26 points, while Culpepper, a sophomore, chipped in 21.
They were given a hand by freshman forward Arnett Moultrie who had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Northeastern kept it close in the first quarter, but a Culpepper dunk ignited a 19-15 run that gave the Miners a 35-27 lead at the half.
After Matt Janning began the second half by scoring 6 of NU's first 10 points, the Miners went on a 12-2 burst that put them ahead, 57-39. Allen drained a 3-pointer at 5:40 that got the Huskies within 65-55. However, the Miners scored 8 of the next 11 points to pull away.
Janning finished with 16 points for NU.
The Miners shot 49.1 percent for the game and outrebounded the Huskies, 32-27. They had 18 second-chance points to NU's 9.
The Huskies had won their first postseason game since 1984 with their victory over Wyoming in the first round.
Oregon State 71, Vermont 70 - Calvin Haynes hit a baseline shot with 6.1 seconds left in overtime to lift the Beavers in a quarterfinal game at Corvallis, Ore.
Junior Marqus Blakely led Vermont, which ended the season at 24-9, with 17 points and seven rebounds.
Oregon State (15-17) now will play Richmond in the semifinals.
Vermont senior Mike Trimboli ended with 15 points and five assists, as he also topped the 2,000-point mark for his career with a jumper with 6:17 left in the first half. Sophomore Joey Accaoui added 12 points off the bench.
Vermont trailed, 69-67, when Trimboli hit a trey from the corner with 19 seconds left for the Catamounts' first points of OT.
After a timeout, Haynes hit his shot just over the outstretched arm of Blakely to give Oregon State the lead.
Vermont rushed it upcourt and junior Nick Vier passed to senior Colin McIntosh, whose attempt from the foul line bounced twice before falling off the rim.
"I feel bad for our seniors, but I want to give Oregon State a lot of credit," said Vermont coach Mike Lonergan, whose team was 9 for 22 on 3-pointers.
Richmond 74, College of Charleston 72 - Kevin Anderson pulled up and hit a jump shot with nine seconds remaining to give the hosts their quarterfinal triumph.
With the win, the Spiders (20-15) reached 20 victories for the 16th time in school history.
Anderson, who finished with 21 points, was 9 of 17 from the field, and had 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 1 turnover in 38 minutes. The guard reached the 20-point mark for the sixth straight game.
David Gonzalvez added 15 points and Ryan Butler scored 10 for the Spiders.
Stanford 70, Wichita State 56 - Lawrence Hill had 21 points and Anthony Goods added 18 as the Cardinal defeated the host Shockers.
Stanford is now 20-13, while Wichita State finished 17-17.
Wichita State's leading scorer was Clevin Hannah, who had 13 points off the bench. J.T. Durley added 11 points and led the Shockers with eight rebounds.
Stanford built a 28-10 lead in the first 10 minutes, while Wichita State went just 4 for 17 to begin the game.
The Wildcats (22-13) advanced to a quarterfinal game at Notre Dame tomorrow.
The Bluejays, who came in off wins in 12 of their past 13 games, finished the season 27-8.
Kentucky played from behind most of the night but found itself in position to win after Justin Carter missed two free throws with 36.4 seconds left.
Meeks, held in check by P'Allen Stinnett and Antoine Young for long stretches, blew past Stinnett on his way to the basket and got fouled by Carter.
After he made the free throw for a 2-point lead, Booker Woodfox missed what would have been the winning 3-pointer just before the buzzer.
Meeks led the Wildcats with 16 points, Perry Stevenson added 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Patrick Patterson had 12 points.
Woodfox had 18 points, Stinnett 15, and Kenny Lawson 12 for Creighton. Carter had 8 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
For the Bluejays, it was more than a game. It was an event.
Saint Mary's 80, Davidson 68 - At Moraga, Calif., Patty Mills had 23 points and 10 assists while outdueling Stephen Curry in a matchup of two elite guards, leading Saint Mary's into the quarterfinals.
Curry had 26 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists in what might have been the national scoring leader's final game for the Wildcats (27-8), but Mills overcame his awful 3-point shooting with effective passing and just enough of his usual daredevil drives to the hoop, preventing Davidson from rallying late.
Omar Samhan added 18 points and nine rebounds for the Gaels (28-6), who will play tomorrow night at San Diego State, with the winner getting a trip to Madison Square Garden next week for the semifinals.![]()
