Chaisson Allen drained a shot from halfcourt as time expired to give Northeastern a thrilling 70-67 victory over Wright State yesterday at Matthews Arena.
Allen’s long-distance heave had barely finished rippling the twine when teammates and fans mobbed the junior guard in celebration.
Allen, who had 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists, grabbed a rebound with four seconds to play and dribbled to the midcourt line before releasing the winning shot.
“Once I got the rebound, I didn’t know how much time was on the clock,’’ Allen said. “So I checked the clock and saw that there was two seconds left and I could get one or two dribbles in. Once I released it and saw it in the air, I felt like it had a chance. Then it dropped.’’
Close calls are nothing new for the Huskies (2-2), whose widest margin in a game this season has been 6 points. All four games have been decided by a total of 15 points.
“Both teams made winning basketball plays,’’ said Northeastern coach Bill Coen. “Chase Allen just made the last one of the afternoon.’’
Matt Janning scored 15 points and Manny Adako added 11 for the Huskies.
The Huskies led, 66-60, with 1:16 left but the Raiders tied the game on 3-pointers by Troy Tabler and Vaughn Duggins. A free throw by Duggins gave the Raiders a 67-66 lead, then a free throw by Allen tied it with 39 seconds remaining.
