Northeastern skates past Vermont

Freshman Justin Daniels and senior Kyle Kraemer scored second-period goals to give Northeastern the lead and power the Huskies to their first Hockey East road victory of the season, edging No. 18 Vermont, 3-1, last night at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

The Catamounts (10-7-2, 4-6-2) jumped on the board 24 seconds into the game on a goal by Colin Vock. But Daniels evened things 54 seconds into the second period and Kraemer put the Huskies (9-10-1, 5-9-1) up for good at 10:50 of the period.

Junior Wade MacLeod scored an empty-netter as NU leapfrogged Vermont in the conference standings.

Freshman goaltender Chris Rawlings evened his record at 8-8-1 with 18 saves. UVM’s Rob Madore made 13 saves.

“This is definitely a big road win for this team,’’ said NU coach Greg Cronin, who credited Rawlings with keeping the game close in the first period.

UMass 3, UMass-Lowell 2 - Third-period goals by James Marcou and Michael Marcou lifted the No. 19 Minutemen past the No. 15 River Hawks in a Hockey East contest in Amherst.

The Minutemen (13-8-0, 8-6-0) took a 2-1 lead early in the third period but Lowell tied it with five minutes to play before Michael Marcou netted his second game-winner of the season.

Paul Dainton made 31 saves for UMass, while Nevin Hamilton stopped 35 shots for the River Hawks (12-7-2, 6-5-2).

Providence 3, BU 1 - Mark Fayne, Greg Collins, and Daniel New scored second-period goals that propelled the Friars past the visiting Terriers and ended a six-game losing streak.

The Terriers (6-10-3, 4-8-2 Hockey East) cut the deficit to 3-1 at 7:47 of the third period on Ross Gaudet’s fourth goal of the season.

Sophomore Alex Beaudry stopped 28 shots for the Friars (8-10-1, 3-8-1), while Kieran Millan stopped 21 for BU.

St. Cloud State 3, Quinnipiac 1 - Garrett Raboin scored a shorthanded goal at 11:59 of the second period to snap a 1-1 tie and send the No. 14th-ranked Huskies (13-7-3) to a nonleague road victory over the No. 17 Bobcats (13-8-1). Freshman Russell Goodman scored for Quinnipiac.

Air Force 6, Bentley 3 - In a battle of Falcons, Air Force (10-8-5, 10-4-5 Atlantic Hockey) got goals from six players in beating host Bentley (9-9-3, 7-6-2), which received strikes from Jamie Nudy, Jeremy Robert, and Brett Hartung.

Women’s hockey
Northeastern 3, Maine 1 - Alyssa Wohlfeiler, Rachel Llanes, and Lindsay Domaas tallied for the Huskies, who knocked off the host Black Bears.

UMass-Boston 2, Norwich 1 - Hannah Davis scored the winner with less than three minutes to play, and Leah Hallett made 42 saves to lead the Beacons (8-7-0, 6-4-0 ECAC East) past the visiting Cadets (9-2-2, 8-2-2).

Men’s basketball
Brown 75, Yale 66 - Steve Gruber came off the bench to score 15 points, including 7 during a key 10-2 run in the second half, to power the Bears (7-11, 1-0 Ivy) past the Bulldogs (6-12, 0-1) in New Haven.

Brandeis 58, Washington (Mo.) 55 - In St. Louis, the backcourt combination of Andre Roberson (15 points) and Tyrone Hughes (13) combined for 28 points, including 6 of the squad’s 9 points in overtime as the No. 20 Judges (10-2, 1-1 University Athletic) defeated the No. 3 Bears (11-2, 1-1), who are the two-time defending Division 3 NCAA champions.

Women’s basketball
Brown 60, Yale 56 - Aileen Daniels scored 15 points to lead the host Bears (4-11, 1-0) past the Bulldogs (5-9, 0-1) in the Ivy League opener for both teams.

Williams 59, Tufts 57 - Claire Baecher dropped in a reverse layup with 0.7 seconds remaining as the host Ephs (12-4, 1-0 NESCAC) snapped the 12-game winning streak of the 11th-ranked Jumbos (12-2, 0-1).
