COLLEGE HOCKEY ROUNDUP

Dogged Terriers get fair share

In his young career at Providence College, Tyler Sims has made things difficult for Boston University. Difficult, but not impossible.

The 18th-ranked Terriers rallied from a two-goal deficit against Sims & Co. last night, getting a goal from Dan Spang midway through the third period for a 2-2 tie in Providence.

Despite getting quality chances in overtime, BU (3-4-1, 3-3-1 Hockey East) could not get the winning goal past sophomore Sims (29 saves), who stopped 51 shots when PC won the first game of their playoff series over the Terriers last season before dropping the next two.

Torry Gajda (first period) and Kyle Laughlin (second) gave PC (6-4-1, 6-2-1) a 2-0 lead before Bryan Ewing put BU on the board at 7:33 of the second.

John Curry stopped 26 shots for BU.

Harvard 4, Yale 3 -- Ryan Maki scored at 1:48 of overtime to lift the 19th-ranked Crimson past the Bulldogs at Bright Hockey Center.

Paul Dufault, Nick Coskren, and Kevin Du each had two-point nights for the Crimson (5-2-0, 4-2-0 ECACHL), who won their seventh straight over Yale (0-5, 0-5).

Yale's Jeff Hristovski blasted a shot past John Daigneau from the right faceoff dot to tie the game, 3-3, at 13:35 of the third period.

Harvard responded in overtime. Mike Taylor fed Du from behind the net, and Du set up Maki, whose one-timer beat Alec Richards (30 saves).

UNH 3, UMass-Lowell 2 -- Greg Collins scored with 1:12 to play in the third period as the ninth-ranked Wildcats (7-3-1, 6-1 Hockey East) edged the visiting River Hawks (3-7, 2-5).

Second-period strikes by Jacob Micflikier and Mike Radja gave UNH a 2-1 lead after Mike Potacco scored in the first.

Jason Tejchma's goal early in the third period tied the game for the River Hawks, who got 36 saves from Peter Vetri.

Jeff Pietrasiak stopped 31 shots for the Wildcats.

Vermont 3, Merrimack 0 -- The host Warriors didn't play with the urgency one would expect from a team looking to snap a 23-game streak without a Hockey East victory.

The eighth-ranked Catamounts (9-2, 3-2) outshot Merrimack, 15-1, in the third period and scored three times in that stanza in the teams' first meeting as conference rivals.

Peter Lenes and Kenny Macaulay scored power-play goals, and Dean Strong added an insurance goal at even strength.

Jim Healey stopped 25 shots for the Warriors (3-6, 0-4).

Dartmouth 3, Brown 2 -- Eric Przepiorka, David Jones, and Mike Ouellette scored first-period goals and the host Big Green (2-4, 2-4 ECACHL) continued to frustrate Brown (2-3, 2-3 ECACHL), barely hanging on for their seventh straight victory over the Bruins.

Holy Cross 1, AIC 1 -- Dewey Thomson scored with three seconds remaining in regulation as the host Crusaders (5-2-1, 4-2-1 Atlantic Hockey) tied the Yellow Jackets (0-6-1, 0-4-1).

Army 1, Bentley 1 -- Bentley's Ray Jean stopped 34 shots but couldn't stop Chase Podsiad's at 10:11 of the third period as the visiting Black Knights (2-7-2, 0-3-2 Atlantic Hockey) tied the Falcons (4-5-2, 2-1-2).

Middlebury 4, Tufts 1 -- The top-ranked Panthers began defense of their Division 3 national title by scoring three goals in the final 3:18 -- by Eric LaFreniere, Evgeny Saidachev, and Kyle Koziara -- for a victory over the host Jumbos.

Colby 4, Babson 1 -- Joel Covelli, Greg Osborne, and Cass Buttafuocco scored third-period goals as the visiting Mules pulled away from the Beavers, who are ranked 10th in Division 3.

Bowdoin 7, UMass-Boston 0 -- The Polar Bears received goals from seven players while limiting the host Beacons to eight shots.

Amherst 3, Wesleyan 1 -- Charlestown's Josh Fillman made 31 saves and A.J. Greco scored twice as the host Jeffs downed the Cardinals.

Women

Yale 3, Harvard 1 -- Love wasn't lost in this version of The Game.

Sarah Love made 46 saves to lead the host Bulldogs to an upset of the sixth-ranked Crimson. She held the Crimson (3-2-1, 2-2-1 ECACHL) without a goal for 59 minutes 7 seconds, despite a 47-17 advantage in shots for Harvard.

Harvard, which has not been shut out since the 2001-02 season, got on the scoreboard with 53 seconds left in regulation, when Jennifer Sifers cut Yale's lead to 2-1.

Sarah Tittman, who assisted on the first goal, iced the game with an empty-netter for Yale (2-3-2, 2-1-1).

Brown 2, Dartmouth 0 -- Hayley Moore and Heather Lane scored first-period goals, and Stacy Silverman stopped 27 shots as the host Bruins blanked the Big Green.
