For Wildcats, it's not easy beating Green

With state bragging rights on the line, New Hampshire and Dartmouth continued their recent tradition of memorable games last night, the third-ranked Wildcats sweating out a 4-2 victory over the Big Green in Manchester, N.H.

Josh Ciocco set up the winning goal by Kevin Kapstad with six minutes left in the third period, then assisted on Brett Hemingway's insurance strike as the Wildcats retained the RiverStone Cup.

Jacob Micflikier and Joe Charlebois also scored for UNH (17-3-1), with Kevin Swallow and Tanner Glass responding with tying goals for Dartmouth (6-8-2).

Glass's power-play tally knotted the score at 2-2 at 7:58 of the third.

South Boston's Kevin Regan, a UNH junior, stopped 43 shots and kept Dartmouth from taking control in a scoreless first period during which the Big Green outshot the Wildcats, 17-2. Mike Devine made 24 saves for Dartmouth.

In last season's clash, Micflikier scored the winner with 15 seconds to play, less than a minute after Dartmouth had tied the game and immediately after Micflikier was denied on a penalty shot by Devine. The previous season, the Big Green scored four third-period goals to stun UNH, 9-8.

Vermont 3, Northeastern 0 -- At Matthews Arena, Torrey Mitchell scored twice, once into an empty net, and Joe Fallon stopped 23 shots as the 18th-ranked Catamounts (12-8-2, 7-4-2 Hockey East) snapped a four-game winless streak (0-3-1) and put an end to a four-game (2-0-2) unbeaten run by the Huskies.

Brad Thiessen stopped 23 shots for Northeastern (6-11-4, 3-9-4).

Providence 3, UMass-Lowell 2 -- Colin McDonald's overtime goal lifted the Friars (5-15-1, 4-9-1 Hockey East) past the reeling River Hawks at Tsongas Arena.

Kyle Laughlin set up McDonald, who skated in on a breakaway and lifted a backhander past Vinny Monaco for his team-leading ninth goal of the season.

Jason Bergeron and Jeremy Dehner (first career goal) scored, and Monaco stopped 35 shots for the River Hawks (3-14-5, 2-10-2), who are winless in 15 games (0-13-2). The Friars snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Bentley 5, AIC 3 -- Anthony Canzoneri scored twice and added an assist as the Falcons (9-11-1, 8-8 Atlantic Hockey) beat the Yellow Jackets (3-17, 3-14) in Watertown.

Holy Cross 2, Air Force 2 -- In Worcester, James Sixsmith's 12th goal of the season tied the game in the second period, and Tyler Chestnut stopped 32 shots as the Crusaders (11-8-5, 8-3-5 Atlantic Hockey) earned a point against the Falcons (11-8-5, 8-3-5).

UConn 4, Canisius 3 -- Ryan Hawkins whistled a one-timer into the top right corner of the net with less than four minutes to play in the third period, lifting the Huskies (8-14, 8-8 Atlantic Hockey) past the Golden Griffins (6-16-1, 6-11-1) in Storrs, Conn.

Quinnipiac 6, Yale 2 -- Brandon Wong and Mike Atkinson each scored twice for the 19th-ranked Bobcats (11-6-4, 8-3-3 ECACHL), who routed the host Bulldogs (8-7-2, 5-5).

Princeton 3, Brown 2 -- Grant Goeckner-Zoeller scored twice, including the winner on a power play in overtime, as the host Tigers (9-9-2, 6-7-1 ECACHL) tripped the Bears (7-7-3, 3-6-1).

UMass-Boston 5, Saint Michael's 4 -- Rocco Dabecco scored the tying goal with 30 seconds left, and Ryan Daust scored the winner with three seconds to play as the Beacons (4-9-1) capped a frenetic finish with a victory over the host Purple Knights (5-7).

Women
UNH 3, Maine 1 -- The winningest team in women's college hockey reached a milestone, winning for the 600th time in its 30-year history. Kelly Paton scored twice, and Sam Faber set up all three goals as the third-ranked Wildcats (17-2-3, 9-1 Hockey East) subdued the Black Bears (6-12-1, 1-7-2) in Durham, N.H.

BC 5, Vermont 0 -- Freshman Kelli Stack scored and added three assists as the Eagles (15-5-2, 9-3) kept pace with New Hampshire in Hockey East by blanking the Catamounts (3-17-2, 1-9-1) in Burlington, Vt.

BU 4, Northeastern 2 -- Cara Hendry scored the decisive goal on a third-period power play, and the Terriers (13-7-2, 5-5-1 Hockey East) held off the Huskies (3-17-1, 2-10-1) at Walter Brown Arena.

UConn 4, Dartmouth 2 -- Dominique Thibault scored twice and Brittany Wilson stopped 28 shots as the host Huskies (12-9-1) upset the fourth-ranked Big Green (14-4-2).
