Russo helps rally No. 11 NU past Bowling Green

Jimmy Russo scored twice and added an assist and Louis Liotti scored the winner as Northeastern wiped out a three-goal deficit and rallied to beat Bowling Green, 4-3, last night in the first round of the Badger Showdown in Madison, Wis.

The 11th-ranked Huskies (8-4-2), who extended their unbeaten streak to nine games, trailed, 3-0, after Jacob Cepis beat Brad Thiessen at 2:24 of the second period.

But the Huskies responded. Dan Nycholat scored at 11:19 and Russo cut the deficit to one at 13:49. Russo tied it with his second score at 5:00 of the final period and Liotti scored his first goal of the season to win it at 13:03.

NU will face Colgate, which beat Wisconsin in a shootout, in today's final.

UMass-Lowell 3, Cornell 2 - Chris Auger and Kory Falite scored third-period goals, rallying the No. 20 River Hawks past the Big Red (4-5-1) in the opening round of the Florida College Classic in Estero, Fla.

Down, 2-1, Auger tied it for UMass-Lowell (8-4-4) at 4:52. Falite struck on a power play at 11:33 for the lead, and goalie Nevin Hamilton (23 saves) made it stand up.

Maine 5, Clarkson 3 - Andrew Sweetland scored twice, helping the Black Bears (6-7-2) surprise the eighth-ranked Golden Knights (10-6) and advance to the final of the Florida College Classic.

Dartmouth 4, Northern Michigan 1 - J.T. Wyman had a goal and an assist - including the wining tally in the second period - and the Big Green (5-4-1) topped the Wildcats (7-11-1) in the opening round of the Denver Cup. Dartmouth meets third-ranked Denver in tonight's title game.

Michigan 6, Providence 0 - Billy Sauer made 50 saves and Aaron Palushaj had a goal and two assists, lifting the No. 2 Wolverines (17-2-0) past the Friars (6-7-2) in the opening round of the Great Lakes Invitational in Detroit.

North Dakota 3, UNH 1 - In Grand Forks, N.D., Evan Trupp and Ryan Martens scored scored 41 seconds apart early in the third period to send the seventh-ranked Fighting Sioux (9-6-1) past the No. 10 Wildcats (9-5-1).

Yale 6, Nebraska-Omaha 3 - Broc Little scored three times in the third period to lift the Bulldogs (5-5-3) past the host Mavericks.

Bowdoin 6, Salem St. 3 - Freshman Ryan Leary scored twice and the Polar Bears (7-2) broke open a close game with three third-period goals to beat the Vikings (5-5) in the championship of the Salem State Hockey Classic, making Terry Meagher the seventh Division 3 coach to win 400 games.

UMass-Boston 5, Suffolk 4 - Kris Kranzky had two goals and an assist and Eric Tufman scored the winner with 1:38 left to lift the Beacons (4-4-1) past the Rams (7-5) in the opening round of the Codfish Bowl at Clark Athletics Center. UMass-Boston will meet Fitchburg State (6-3-2), a 5-0 winner over Southern New Hampshire (6-2-1), in today's final.
