Ryan Ginand scored the winning goal with 1:22 remaining in the final period, lifting No. 11 Northeastern to a 2-1 victory over Colgate in the championship game of the Badger Showdown at Madison, Wis.
The victory extended the Huskies' unbeaten streak to 10 games (8-0-2), currently the longest in the nation. Northeastern is 9-4-2 overall.
Both teams had several quality chances to break a 1-1 tie in the third period, but Ginand was the only player to find the back of the net, taking a pass from Denis Chisholm at the top of the left circle and beating Colgate goalie Mark Dekanich low to his blocker side for the winning score. Steve Silva also assisted.
The Red Raiders (7-8-3) pulled Dekanich soon thereafter but were unable to get the equalizer.
Randy Guzior gave Northeastern a 1-0 lead at 6:58 of the first period on assists from Silva and Rob Rassey. Tom Riley scored Colgate's goal at 7:10 of the second period.
Brad Theissen stopped 26 shots for the Huskies, including 13 in the first period.
New Hampshire 7, North Dakota 4 - Mike Radja scored two goals - including the winner in the Wildcats' five-goal third period - and added three assists, helping No. 10 UNH overcome a 3-1 deficit and defeat the No. 7 Fighting Sioux (9-7-1) at Grand Forks, N.D.
Matt Fortunato had a goal and two assists for UNH (10-5-2), and he had the first tally of the final period to tie the score at 3-3.
Jerry Pollastrone of Revere put the Wildcats ahead, 4-3, at 17:01, and just 51 seconds later, Radja scored the game-winner.
UNH netminder Kevin Regan of South Boston recorded a season-high 40 stops, becoming the Wildcats' all-time saves leader (2,608).
UMass 4, Notre Dame 3 - Cory Quirk had a goal and three assists, P.J. Fenton added three assists, and the No. 9 Minutemen scored three power-play goals to end the sixth-ranked Fighting Irish's nine-game winning streak in the first round of the Lightning College Hockey Classic in Tampa.
Notre Dame (16-5-0) took a 3-2 lead at 8:54 of the second period on Luke Lucyk's first goal of the season, but UMass (8-3-5) tied it on Justin Braun's power-play goal nearly nine minutes later.
At 14:26 of the third period, James Marcou potted the winner for UMass on the power play, with assists from Quirk and Braun.
Paul Dainton made 29 saves for the Minutemen.
Ohio St. 4, Harvard 2 - Shane Sims scored the winning goal at 7:40 of the second period, helping the Buckeyes overtake the Crimson in the semifinals of the Ohio Hockey Classic in Columbus.
Michael Biega and Brian McCafferty gave Harvard (6-5-2) a 2-1 lead in the first period, sandwiching their goals around a tally by the Buckeyes' Kyle Reed. But Jason DeSantis tied it for the Buckeyes (6-13-2) on a four-on-four situation 33 seconds into the second period, and Sims got the winner a little more than seven minutes later.
Providence 5, Michigan St. 3 - Jon Rheault and Kyle MacKinnon each scored two goals, and the Friars rallied from a 2-1 deficit with four third-period goals en route to a victory over the No. 5 Spartans (12-5-2) in the consolation game of the Great Lakes Invitational at Detroit.
Trailing, 2-1, at the 1:11 mark of the third period, the Friars (7-7-2) scored three straight goals to take a 4-2 lead. John Cavanagh scored at 7:49, then Rheault gave Providence the lead for good at 9:41 with his second goal of the night.
Ferris St. 2, Brown 1 - The Bulldogs scored twice in a span of less than five minutes midway through the second period to erase a 1-0 deficit and defeat the Bears in first-round action at the
Jordan Pietrus gave Brown (1-8-3) a 1-0 lead 2:11 into the game. But Adam Miller scored the equalizer for the Bulldogs at 10:57 of the second period, and 4:42 later Mike Fillinger scored his first career goal for the eventual winner.
Mark Sibbald made a career-high 39 saves for the Bears.
UMass-Lowell 6, Maine 0 - Jonathan Maniff scored twice and added an assist, and Scott Campbell also scored twice as the 20th-ranked River Hawks (9-4-4) overwhelmed the Black Bears (6-8-2) in the championship game of the Florida College Hockey Classic in Estero.
Carter Hutton made 31 saves to earn the shutout.
Vermont 1, Holy Cross 1 - At Burlington, Vt., Peter Lenes scored the tying goal on the power play with 32 seconds remaining, and the Catamounts won a shootout, 4-3, to advance to the championship game of the Catamount Cup.
Quinnipiac 2, W. Michigan 1 - Brandon Wong and Brett Dickinson each had a goal, helping the Bobcats (9-5-2) edge the Broncos (6-11-0) in the Catamount Cup.![]()
