Surging Northeastern rolls over Maine

Northeastern's nation-leading unbeaten streak moved to 11 games (9-0-2) as the ninth-ranked Huskies used a four-goal third period to roll over the Black Bears, 7-3, in a Hockey East showdown last night in Orono, Maine.

Freshman Wade MacLeod scored two goals, including the winner, and added an assist. Joe Vitale added a goal and had three assists.

Northeastern upped its record to 10-4-2 and 7-3-1, while Maine fell to 6-9-2 and 3-6-2. The Huskies are tied with New Hampshire atop the league standings after UNH beat Merrimack.

Northeastern jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second period on goals from Jimmy Russo, Tyler McNeely, and Randy Guzior.

Brad Thiessen made 20 saves for the victory.

Maine's Rob Bellamy scored twice and Robby Dee also scored for the Black Bears.

UNH 1, Merrimack 0 - Phil DeSimone's first goal of the season with 9:29 to play in regulation broke a scoreless tie and gave the seventh-ranked Wildcats the victory in North Andover. Kevin Regan made 34 saves for UNH.

Harvard 3, Quinnipiac 3 - The Bobcats saw a 3-1 lead slip away in the second period when the Crimson rebounded for a tie in their ECAC contest in Hamden, Conn. Quinnipiac is 10-5-3 overall and 3-3-3 while Harvard moved to 6-6-3 overall and 5-3-2.

Dan Travis and Bryan Leitch each had a goal and an assist for Quinnipiac and Ben Nelson scored his team-leading ninth goal.

Harvard jumped on the board with just under four minutes to play in the period when Michael Biega scored his eighth goal of the year. Mike Taylor scored his third goal of the year at 1:37 into the second period and Chad Morin tied the game at the 11:36 mark.

Women's hockey

Harvard 4, Cornell 1 - Sarah Vaillancourt scored a goal and added two assists as the No. 3 Crimson (12-1) remained perfect in the ECAC (10-0) with a victory over the visiting Big Red.

Vaillancourt extended her point-scoring streak to 13 consecutive games. She has 10 points in her last two games against Cornell (7-5-1, 4-2-1).

Quinnipiac 3, Robert Morris 1 - Erica Bolognino scored her fourth goal of the year, Elyse Cole collected a pair of assists, and Jamie Miller had 24 saves as the Bobcats got by the Colonials for their second straight win.

Quinnipiac is 3-12-4; Robert Morris is 10-11-1.

Saint Anselm 2, Bowdoin 0 - At Manchester, N.H., Kelsey Johnson and Kathleen Twomey lifted the Hawks (8-0) to their eighth straight win and Andrea Berlin made 20 saves for her third shutout of the season. Samantha Schwager had 14 saves for the Polar Bears, who dropped to 1-4-1.

Men's basketball

Brown 68, American 55 - Damon Huffman scored 29 points and Peter Sullivan added a career-high 14 as the Bears defeated the Eagles in Providence.

Huffman connected on 9 of 13 shots, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range, and 8 of 9 free throws.

Women's basketball

UCLA 69, Stanford 56 - Darxia Morris scored 20 points, Lindsay Pluimer added 12, and the Bruins upset the second-ranked Cardinal in Los Angeles for the first victory over a top 3 team in school history.

The Bruins (7-7, 2-1 Pac-10) led virtually the entire game against a Cardinal team that had been blowing out opponents by an average of 20.2 points.

Candice Wiggins had 29 points and 10 rebounds and Jayne Appel added 17 points for Stanford (12-2, 2-1), whose nine-game winning streak was snapped.

Baylor 84, Texas State 57 - Rachel Allison had 23 points and 13 rebounds to lead the No. 9 Bears over the Bobcats in Waco, Texas.

Angela Tisdale added 19 points, Jessica Morrow 12, and Jhasmin Player 11 for Baylor (12-1).

California 57, Southern Cal 52 - Devanei Hampton had season highs of 21 points and 13 rebounds to help the No. 10 Bears (12-2) get by the Trojans in Los Angeles.

Texas 91, Texas-Pan American 43 - Ashley Lindsey scored 11 of her 13 points in the first half to help the No. 16 Longhorns (12-2) run away from the Broncos (8-8) in Austin, Texas.

Colorado 65, Pepperdine 53 - Jackie McFarland had 19 points and eight rebounds to help the No. 23 Buffaloes (11-2) win their 10th straight over the visiting Waves (5-8).

Saint Anselm 61, UMass-Lowell 60 - Courtney May's layup at the buzzer lifted the Hawks over the Riverhawks in Manchester, N.H.

Cassaundra Thorpe led four Hawks in double figures with 15 points.
