Balanced UNH opens with rout of Badgers

New Hampshire got goals from five players and erased an early deficit last night to beat Wisconsin, 5-1, in its season opener in Durham, N.H.

After John Mitchell got Wisconsin (0-2) on the board at 3:43 of the second period, seventh-ranked UNH went to work, scoring twice in 39 seconds. James van Riemsdyk struck first on the power play at 6:29, with freshman Blake Kessel, brother of the Bruins' Phil Kessel, getting an assist. Paul Thompson put the Wildcats ahead for good at 7:08 and Mike Sislo added an unassisted tally with 1:05 left in the period for a 3-1 lead.

Greg Collins and Peter LeBlanc tallied in the third period to close out the No. 14 Badgers.

Colgate 2, UMass-Lowell 1 - David McIntyre scored with 13 seconds left in the second period to break a 1-1 tie, and the Raiders hung on to down the River Hawks in Hamilton, N.Y., in the opener for both teams. Patrick Cey scored for UMass-Lowell.

Merrimack 3, Robert Morris 1 - J.C. Robitaille broke a 1-1 tie with a goal at 1:57 of the third period as the Warriors opened with a home win over the Eagles.

Vermont 4, RPI 1 - Chris Atkinson, Brayden Irwin, and Justin Milo scored in the third period and the No. 20 Catamounts stopped the Engineers in the opener for both teams in Quebec City.

Alaska 5, UConn 0 - Braden Walls scored 35 seconds in and the Nanooks (1-0-1) dominated the Huskies (0-2-0) in the Kendall Classic in Anchorage.

Women
UNH 5, Niagara 3 - Jenn Wakefield had two goals and two assists, leading the No. 4 Wildcats (1-0-1) past the host Purple Eagles (0-3).
