Hole truths: Huskies, UMass in too deep

Two two-goal holes were too much for Northeastern to dig itself out of yesterday.

The fourth-ranked Huskies rallied after Marc Hagel's first-period goals gave No. 7 Princeton a 2-0 lead, but Kevin Kaiser (power play) and Derrick Pallis (shorthanded) restored the Tigers' two-goal edge in the second and they held on for a 5-3 win in the first game of the RPI Holiday Tournament in Troy, N.Y.

Ryan Ginand, Chris Donovan, and Alex Tuckerman scored for Northeastern (9-3-2). Tuckerman's goal at 5:40 of the third brought the Huskies within 4-3, but Dan Bartlett secured the win for Princeton (9-1-0) with an empty-net goal at 19:07.

Brad Thiessen made 34 saves for Northeastern, which was outshot, 39-21. NU will play Rensselaer, a 4-1 loser to Mercyhurst, in today's consolation game.

On Hagel's first goal, Thiessen played the puck in the corner but couldn't clear it out of the zone and was out of position when Hagel scored at 1:36. Hagel scored again at 5:30 of the first.

With his third goal in as many games, Ginand put the Huskies on the board at 2:13 of the second with a wraparound stuff. Donovan's power-play goal at 4:01 tied the game.

Tuckerman's slapper trickled past Zane Kalemba (18 saves) at 5:40 of the third.

St. Lawrence 4, UMass 3 - In Amherst, the 17th-ranked Minutemen went 0 for 6 on the power play and were unable to climb back from a four-goal deficit against the Saints.

Cory Quirk led the Minutemen (6-6-1) with two goals and an assist, and Alex Berry scored his fifth goal of the season.

Zach Miskovic had two goals and Robby Moss stopped 24 shots for St. Lawrence (5-6-1).

With Paul Dainton (17 saves) off for an extra attacker, Quirk scored with 1:04 left and Berry with 37 seconds remaining.

UMass outshot St. Lawrence, 11-6, in the third. After Quirk received a pass from James Marcou, he beat Moss from the bottom of the right faceoff dot. Berry then notched his fifth of the season with a wrister from the point.

Dartmouth 4, Providence 2 - Adam Estoclet scored once and assisted on another goal as the Big Green (6-3-0) won in Providence.

Ian O'Connor and Robert Maloney lit the lamp for the Friars (2-10-1), while Andrew Owsiak, Joe Gaudet, and Matt Reber also tallied for Dartmouth.

Minn.-Duluth 2, Dartmouth 1 - The third-ranked Big Green (7-2-1) squandered a third-period lead, with Saara Tuominen scoring the winner for the host seventh-ranked Bulldogs (8-5-2) on a power play with 1:46 to play. Sarah Newnam put Dartmouth ahead in the first period.
