Since dropping a pair of games to Vermont in late November, Boston University has been one of the hottest teams in the country. The third-ranked Terriers ran their unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1) last night by defeating fifth-ranked Denver, 4-1, in the Wells Fargo Denver Cup.
BU (13-4-1) jumped ahead, 2-0, on first-period goals by Vinny Saponari and Matt Gilroy. After the Pioneers cut the deficit in half late in the second, the Terriers responded a little over a minute later on a Brandon Yip tally.
BU's Kieran Millan made 13 of his 33 saves in the final period, and Zach Cohen tacked on an empty-netter with 1:08 remaining. The Terriers killed off all seven power plays by the Pioneers (13-6-2).
In the third-place game in Denver, Holy Cross (6-11-2) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Rensselaer, 4-3.
Minnesota 3, Northeastern 2 - The No. 4 Golden Gophers (10-3-5) won the championship game of the Dodge Holiday Classic in Minneapolis when Patrick White scored a power-play goal 1:38 into overtime.
The No. 6 Huskies (12-4-2) went ahead, 2-1, midway through the second period on a goal by Tyler McNeely. Aaron Ness tied it for Minnesota at 11:32 of the third.
Brown and Western Michigan tied, 1-1, in the consolation.
Princeton 5, Harvard 1 - Brett Wilson scored a power-play goal and a shorthanded goal for the eighth-ranked Tigers (13-2, 8-1 ECAC), who outshot the visiting Crimson, 41-19.
Harvard (4-10-2, 4-5-2) tied the game at 1 on a goal by Michael Biega at 7:49 of the first, but Princeton kept pouring it on, scoring four more times before Matt Hoyle (27 saves) was pulled from the Crimson net with 8:39 remaining.
Quinnipiac 6, Dartmouth 0 - Dan Clarke made 19 saves for the shutout and Bryan Leitch had a pair of scores for the Bobcats (11-6-1, 6-3-1 ECAC) in Hamden, Conn. The No. 20 Big Green fell to 8-5, 5-3.
Union 2, UMass-Lowell 1 - Carter Hutton had 21 saves for the River Hawks (8-10) in a consolation-game loss to the Dutchmen (9-8-1) at the Shillelagh Tournament in Hoffman Estates, Ill.
Vermont 4, St. Lawrence 0 - Jack Downing's two first-period scores paced No. 13 Vermont (11-4-2) in the title game of the Catamount Cup in Burlington, Vt. In the third-place game, Colgate and Ferris State tied, 3-3.
Air Force 4, UConn 3 - Jacques Lamoureux's strike with 3:03 left in regulation gave the 11th-ranked Falcons (15-3-1, 12-1-1 Atlantic) a home victory over the Huskies (4-13-1, 3-6-1).
RIT 4, Bentley 2 - Dain Prewitt scored for the Falcons (6-10-1, 5-6-1 Atlantic) just 1:21 into the contest, but the Engineers (10-9-1, 9-4-1) responded with four straight goals in Watertown.
Robert Morris 5, AIC 2 - Tom Mele had a goal and an assist for the Yellow Jackets (4-14) in their road loss to the Colonials (4-10-2).
Niagara 4, Sacred Heart 2 - Bryan Haczyk broke a third-period tie as the Purple Eagles (9-6-1) beat the host Pioneers (4-12-3).
Curry 4, Middlebury 1 - At the Holiday Classic in Middlebury, Vt., the Colonels (8-2) got a pair of goals from Michael Guzzo to reach the title game and hand the Panthers (6-1) their first loss.
N.E. College 7, Saint Anselm 0 - Also in Middlebury, the Pilgrims (6-2) advanced behind a pair of goals from Jeff Armando.
Williams 2, Wesleyan 0 - In the consolation game of the Cardinal Classic in Plattsburgh, N.Y., Brett Haraguchi gave the Ephs (5-3) the only goal they needed, in the first period.
Becker 4, Plymouth St. 2 - Mike Caprio and Martin Oberg scored in the first period to send the Hawks (4-9) to victory in Waterville, Maine.
BC 1, Yale 0 - Danielle Welch scored at 1:52 of overtime, lifting the No. 8 Eagles (12-4-3) past the upset-minded Bulldogs (7-7) in New Haven.
BU 2, Ohio St. 2 - At Columbus, Ohio, the No. 9 Terriers (9-5-5) tied the Buckeyes (6-12-2) on Holly Lorms's goal with 1:31 left in regulation.
Harvard 3, Quinnipiac 1 - Kirsten Kester, Kati Vaughn, and Randi Griffin tallied for the Crimson (6-6-3, 3-3-2 ECAC) in Cambridge, and Brittany Martin stopped 25 shots by the Bobcats (3-18-2, 2-7-2).
Brown 2, Northeastern 1 - Erica Kromm had both goals for the Bears (3-10-1), and Stephanie Gavronsky scored for the Huskies (7-8-2) in Providence.
UConn 7, Vermont 0 - Sami Evelyn scored twice in the second period as the host Huskies (12-6-2, 5-4-0 Hockey East) blew away the Catamounts.![]()
