UMass staves off Maine

Cory Quirk and James Marcou each had a goal and an assist, and Paul Dainton made 31 saves as the University of Massachusetts opened a 4-0 lead after two periods, then fought off a third-period blitz by Maine to pull out a 4-3 Hockey East victory last night in Amherst.

The Black Bears (12-16-4, 7-13-3) outshot the Minutemen, 34-27, including an 18-7 advantage in the third period. But UMass (14-15-3, 9-11-3) controlled the play throughout the first period, scoring twice and outshooting Maine, 12-6.

Brian Flynn scored twice for Maine, and Scott Darling made 23 saves.

UMass-Lowell 1, Vermont 0 - Paul Worthington scored the lone goal and Carter Hutton stopped 21 shots as the River Hawks (15-13-2, 12-9-2 Hockey East) blanked the No. 6 Catamounts (17-8-5, 12-7-4) in Burlington, Vt.

Worthington's goal came at 19:41 of the second period while the River Hawks were shorthanded. UML went 5 for 5 killing penalties.

Merrimack 1, Providence 1 - Matt Bergland knotted things for the Friars (7-17-5, 4-13-5 Hockey East) with a goal late in the first period after Chris Barton had given the host Warriors (7-18-4, 3-16-3) the lead.

Harvard 3, Clarkson 3 - Chris Huxley scored the tying goal with eight minutes left in regulation as the visiting Crimson (7-14-6, 7-7-6) picked up a point for the fourth straight game and moved into sixth place in the ECAC.

Princeton 2, Yale 0 - Jody Pederson's third-period power-play goal proved to be enough as the 10th-ranked Tigers (20-7-0, 14-6-0) upended the seventh-ranked Bulldogs (19-6-2, 14-4-2) at Hobey Baker Rink and moved within 2 points of ECAC-leading Yale.

Bentley 3, Mercyhurst 1 - Freshman goaltender Kyle Rank made 35 saves and Dain Prewitt scored the go-ahead goal 2:31 into the third period as the visiting Falcons (17-14-1, 15-10-1 Atlantic) earned a split of their season series with the Lakers (17-14-3, 15-8-3).

Air Force 4, Holy Cross 3 - The Falcons (21-8-2, 18-5-2 Atlantic) opened a 4-1 lead entering the third period and survived a scare after goals by Andrew Cox and Kyle Atkins got the visiting Crusaders (10-16-5, 9-13-3) back into the game.

Amherst 6, Williams 0 - The Lord Jeffs (18-4-1, 16-2-1 NESCAC), ranked 12th in Division 3, scored six third-period goals to trump the visiting Ephs (14-8-2, 12-5-2) and extend their winning streak to 10.

Norwich 2, Bowdoin 1 - Nikita Kashirsky's goal at 1:51 of the third period snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted the host Cadets (13-7-4) over the Polar Bears (11-11-2) in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Southern Maine 4, Saint Anselm 3 - Chris Travis scored on a breakaway at 3:23 of overtime to give the host Huskies (11-11-3, 8-8-3 ECAC East) the victory over the Hawks (9-14-1, 6-12-1).

Conn. College 9, UMass-Boston 1 - Ryan Riffe tallied his first collegiate hat trick as the Camels (13-8-3, 9-7-3 ECAC East) routed the host Beacons (8-15-2, 4-14-1).

Middlebury 5, Hamilton 2 - Bryan Curran scored two goals and assisted on another as the seventh-ranked Panthers (17-6-1, 14-4-1 NESCAC) clinched the second seed in the conference tournament with the win at Clinton, N.Y.

Women
Harvard 6, Clarkson 1 - Jenny Brine and Sarah Vaillancourt each tallied two goals and collected an assist as the No. 9 Crimson (17-9-3, 16-4-2) clinched their second consecutive ECAC regular-season championship by routing the Golden Knights (16-12-6, 10-8-4) at Bright Center.

BU 3, Northeastern 0 - Allyse Wilcox stopped 20 shots and Jenelle Kohanchuk tallied a goal and an assist as the Terriers (16-10-7, 13-6-1) clinched home ice for the first round of the Hockey East tournament with a victory over the Huskies (12-18-3, 7-12-1) at Matthews Arena.

UNH 4, UConn 3 - Jenn Wakefield broke a tie with 1:32 remaining as the fifth-ranked Wildcats (21-5-5, 15-2-3 Hockey East) edged the 10th-ranked Huskies (19-10-4, 12-6-1) at Storrs, Conn., and extended their winning streak to 12.

Providence 2, BC 1 - Ashley Cottrell scored the only goal of the shootout to give the visiting Friars (16-15-3, 12-8-1 Hockey East) the extra point against the Eagles (21-7-5, 14-5-2), who still clinched second place for the conference tournament.
