With its first Hockey East regular-season title in reach, Northeastern didn't mind having to work a little overtime.

Randy Guzior scored with 26 seconds left in regulation to force the extra session and Steve Quailer connected with 1:05 left in overtime, giving the fourth-ranked Huskies a 2-1 win over No. 20 Boston College last night at Matthews Arena.

The Huskies (23-8-4, 18-5-3), who will host a Hockey East quarterfinal series for the first time since 1997-98, can clinch the regular-season crown with a win over the Eagles (15-13-5, 10-11-5) tonight at Conte Forum or with a loss by second-place Boston University against Providence.

NU looked like it might fall out of the Hockey East lead last night before Guzior finally solved John Muse, ripping a one-timer glove side past the BC netminder.

Brock Bradford beat NU goalie Brad Thiessen at 7:41 of the first period and Muse (30 saves) made it stand up nearly until the end.

The loss ended BC's hopes of passing UMass-Lowell for fifth place.

Vermont 6, UNH 4 - Brian Roloff had a hat trick and the No. 7 Catamounts (20-8-5, 15-7-4) downed the ninth-ranked Wildcats (18-10-5, 14-8-4) in Burlington, Vt., to take over sole possession of third place in Hockey East.

Merrimack 3, UMass 2 - Karl Stollery scored with 24 seconds left in overtime, lifting the host Warriors (9-20-4, 5-18-3 Hockey East) past the Minutemen (14-18-3, 9-14-3).

ECAC - Jeff Foss scored unassisted at 13:49 of overtime to boost Rensselaer (8-25-2) past host Dartmouth, 3-2, on the opening night of the ECAC best-of-three opening-round series. The Beavers will face UMass-Boston (10-15-2) in today's final after the Beacons held on to surprise New England College, 5-4. Eric Tufman had two goals and an assist for UMass-Boston.
