It’s no wonder New Hampshire and top-ranked Miami weren’t able to generate much offense in the third period and overtime last night at the Whittemore Center in Durham.
The teams packed enough action into the second period to last a full weekend, combining to score nine goals in a 5-5 tie.
Blake Kessel scored twice, Bobby Butler had a goal and an assist, and Peter LeBlanc added three assists as the Wildcats (0-2-1) escaped with a point in the weekend series against the No. 1 RedHawks (3-0-1).
After Miami skated off with a 1-0 lead after the first 20 minutes, the teams went to work.
Butler got UNH even at 2:10, but Curtis McKenzie answered 46 seconds later. Nick Krates tied it again 12 seconds later, but Joe Hartman put Miami ahead with a shorthanded tally at 4:49.
Kessel and Mike Borisenok scored power-play goals 1:08 apart to put UNH ahead for the first time, and Kessel scored again a little more than a minute later for a 5-3 lead at 10:08.
Andy Miele (14:55) and Pat Cannone (17:40) answered for Miami, though, and neither team threatened much thereafter, with UNH only putting four shots on net in the final 25 minutes.
Maine 5, Michigan St. 3 - Gustav Nyquist scored the go-ahead goal on the power play with 1:39 to play, lifting the host Black Bears (1-3) past the Spartans (3-1).![]()
