Quinnipiac made its case for the first top-10 ranking in school history, upsetting fifth-ranked Cornell, 3-2, last night in Ithaca, N.Y., to solidify its hold atop ECAC Hockey.

Sophomore Dan Clarke made 23 saves and the 13th-ranked Bobcats got goals from three players - including two freshmen - to improve to 6-0-0 in the ECAC and 10-1-0 overall.

Freshman Zach Davies struck first for Quinnipiac, scoring a power-play goal 6:41 into the game. Mike Atkinson scored with one second to go in the first period for a 2-0 lead, and another freshman, Reese Rolheiser, tallied what proved to be the winner at 11:15 of the second period.

Clarke stymied the Big Red (5-2-0, 4-2-0) for the first 55 minutes, allowing goals by Sean Collins (15:01) and John Esposito (16:48) late before hanging on for the win.

“I’m proud of our effort tonight,’’ coach Rand Pecknold said. “We competed hard. It’s always exciting to get a win against a top-five team.’’

Quinnipiac extended its streak of games without a loss when leading after the second period to 40 (37-0-3).

BC 3, Maine 3 - Robby Dee scored a power-play goal at 6:48 of the third period and the Black Bears came back to earn a tie with the visiting Eagles after squandering a 2-0 lead in the second period.

After Tanner House and Gustav Nyquist scored to put Maine (4-7-1, 3-4-1 Hockey East) ahead, 2-0, midway through the second period, BC (5-3-2, 4-3-2) ran off three straight goals from Pat Mullane, Carl Sneep, and Ben Smith to take the lead.

UMass-Lowell 6, Merrimack 3 - Chris Auger scored two goals and added three assists and Paul Worthington added two goals as the fourth-ranked River Hawks (8-2-1, 4-1-0 Hockey East) beat the Warriors (6-5-0, 3-3-0) at Tsongas Arena.

After J.C. Robitaille put Merrimack ahead at 6:44 of the first period, UMass-Lowell scored the next five goals. Jeremy Dehner got the rally started by scoring at 10:28 of the period and Auger got the first of his two goals 20 seconds later to put the River Hawks ahead for good.

Northeastern 3, Providence 3 - Sophomore defenseman Daniel New scored his second goal at 10:26 of the third period, helping the host Friars (6-4-1, 1-3-1 Hockey East) come away with a tie against the Huskies (5-5-1, 3-4-1).

Freshman Garrett Vermeersch scored his third goal of the season at 15:13 of the second period to put the Huskies up, 3-2, but Chris Rawlings couldn’t close out the win despite finishing with 36 saves.

Harvard 2, Clarkson 2 - Bryan Rufenach and Matt Beca scored 32 seconds apart late in the third period, helping the visiting Golden Knights (4-8-1, 1-4-1 ECAC) rally to tie the Crimson (1-4-2, 1-4-2).

Louis Leblanc scored an unassisted goal in the first period and Marshall Everson added a power-play tally in the second for Harvard.

Yale 6, Brown 5 - Broc Little scored at 3:32 of overtime, helping the No. 9 Bulldogs (3-2-2, 2-1-2 ECAC) escape with a victory over the host Bears (0-6-1, 0-4-1) after blowing a 4-1 first-period lead.

Harry Zolnierczyk had two goals and an assist for Brown, including the tying goal at 10:24 of the third period.

Dartmouth 3, St. Lawrence 2 - Jody O’Neill made 33 saves and the Big Green (1-6-0, 1-6-0 ECAC) raced to a 3-0 lead and held on to surprise the Saints (7-5-1, 3-3-0) for their first win of the season.

Bentley 4, Army 3 - Brett Hartung scored twice and Kyle Rank made 27 saves as the Falcons (4-5-2, 4-3-2 Atlantic) held off the visiting Black Knights (3-8-2, 2-5-1), who got two goals and an assist from Marcel Alvarez.

Mercyhurst 4, Holy Cross 1 - Brandon Coccimiglio had two goals and an assist as the Lakers (4-9-1, 4-5-1 Atlantic) dominated the Crusaders (3-7-2, 3-5-2) in Erie, Pa.

Air Force 3, UConn 1 - Jeff Larson made 35 saves but Jacques Lamoureux had a goal and an assist and the Falcons (6-5-3, 6-1-3 Atlantic) scored three goals in the second period en route to the win over the Huskies (2-8-2, 2-5-2) in Storrs.

Canisius 4, AIC 0 - Scott Moser scored on a penalty shot in the first period and the Golden Griffins (7-6-1, 6-3-1 Atlantic) added three power-play goals in the second to down the host Yellow Jackets (2-8-1, 2-6-1) and complete the weekend sweep.

RIT 5, Sacred Heart 3 - Matt Gingera scored twice for the Pioneers (3-6-2, 2-4-1 Atlantic), but Tyler Brenner scored at 16:23 of the third period to break a 3-3 tie and lift the host Tigers (8-5-0, 8-2-0).

Men’s soccer
Williams 1, York 1 (Williams wins shootout, 7-6) - First-year defender Matt Ratajczak scored on the eighth penalty kick to give the Ephs (16-2-2) the shootout win over the host Spartans and a berth in the NCAA Division 3 Elite Eight tomorrow against Christopher Newport.

Christopher Newport 0, Stevens Tech 0 (Christopher Newport wins shootout, 4-2) - Sophomore Winston Mattheisen converted the clinching penalty kick and Justin Wolfe made nine saves, sending the Captains (19-2-3) to the NCAA Division 3 Elite Eight.

Rochester 2, Wesleyan 1 - Keisuke Yamashita gave the Cardinals an early lead, but Jake Cargill headed in the winner in overtime to help the Yellowjackets oust the Cardinals (12-2-5) in an NCAA Division 3 Sweet 16 game in Grantham, Pa.

Women’s soccer
Johns Hopkins 1, Middlebury 0 - Erica Suter scored just 1:24 into the game and the Blue Jays ousted the Panthers in an NCAA Division 3 Sweet 16 game in Baltimore. Lauryn Torch finished with eight saves for Middlebury (14-4-2).

College of New Jersey 1, Williams 0 - Allyson Anderson scored in the 64th minute and the Lions spoiled the second-ranked Ephs’ perfect season by eliminating Williams (19-1) in an NCAA Division 3 Sweet 16 game in Williamstown.

Field hockey
Salisbury 1, Tufts 0 - Alison Bloodsworth deflected a shot past Marianna Zak in the 46th minute, and the Sea Gulls (19-1) topped the Jumbos (18-2) at Mount Holyoke College to advance to NCAA Division 3 title game against Messiah.

Tufts (18-2), which was eliminated in the national semfinals for the second straight year, played without coach Tina McDavitt, who had an emergency appendectomy Friday night.
