Merrimack halts UNH

New Hampshire had its 11-game unbeaten streak in Hockey East play broken last night when Merrimack skated off with a 3-2 victory in North Andover. Karl Stollery’s second goal of the game, 29 seconds into the third period, won it for the Warriors.

UNH (12-8-4, 11-3-3), ranked 13th in the nation, hadn’t lost in conference play since Nov. 13, going 9-0-2 in that span. The first-place Wildcats got 40 saves from Brian Foster, but it wasn’t enough.

Stephane Da Costa finished with three assists for ninth-place Merrimack, which is 9-1-0 at home but only 9-13-0 overall (6-9-0 in Hockey East).

Northeastern 2, UMass-Lowell 1 - Justin Daniels scored an unassisted goal midway through the third period at Matthews Arena to give the Huskies (11-11-1, 7-10-1) a Hockey East victory over the No. 16 River Hawks (14-10-2, 8-7-2).

BC 5, Providence 2 - Cam Atkinson had two of the five first-period goals pumped in by the No. 14 Eagles (13-8-2, 10-6-2 Hockey East) at Conte Forum.

Maine 6, Vermont 3 - Gustav Nyquist, Klas Leidermark, and Will O’Neill had 3 points apiece for the No. 19 Black Bears (12-9-2, 9-6-1 Hockey East) in a rout of the No. 17 Catamounts (12-9-2, 6-8-2) in Burlington, Vt.

Princeton 2, Harvard 1 - The Tigers (8-10-2, 4-8-1 ECAC) held off the Crimson (5-11-3, 5-6-3) at Bright Center behind 34 saves by Zane Kalemba.

Yale 4, Union 3 - Brendan Mason pocketed a pair of goals for the sixth-ranked Bulldogs (12-5-3, 8-3-2) at home.

Dartmouth 4, Quinnipiac 3 - Adam Estoclet’s goal with 4:27 left in regulation lifted the Big Green (6-14-0, 4-9-0 ECAC) past the Bobcats (13-11-2, 7-7-0) in Hanover, N.H.

Brown 4, Rensselaer 3 - With the host Bears (7-12-1, 5-7-1 ECAC) enjoying a two-man advantage, Aaron Volpatti scored 47 seconds into overtime.

Women’s hockey
Harvard 4, Dartmouth 1 - Kate Buesser potted the go-ahead goal for the No. 7 Crimson (11-5-4, 9-5-2 ECAC) late in the second period, then added an insurance score midway through the third, and Laura Bellamy made a career-high 37 saves in Hanover, N.H.

UNH 5, Maine 2 - The fourth-ranked Wildcats (14-4-5, 8-3-2-0 Hockey East) beat the host Black Bears for the 13th straight time, getting two goals and an assist from Brittany Skudder.

Men’s basketball
Cornell 71, Dartmouth 37 - The host Big Red (17-3, 3-0 Ivy) geared up for tonight’s visit from Harvard by stifling the Big Green (4-13, 0-3), who shot 28 percent from the field. Max Groebe had 15 points in Cornell’s fifth straight win.

Yale 61, Penn 48 - Porter Braswell had 14 points and the Bulldogs (8-12, 2-1 Ivy) rolled after scoring the first 11 points in New Haven.

Princeton 63, Brown 46 - Douglas Davis scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half to lead the Tigers (10-5) in their Ivy League opener. The host Bears (7-13, 1-2) got 10 points from Matt Mullery.

Women’s basketball
Clemson 68, BC 65 - Stefanie Murphy totaled 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Eagles (12-10, 2-4 ACC), but the host Tigers (10-12, 1-5) prevailed by hitting 13 of 15 free throws in the second half.

Duke 73, Florida St. 43 - Jasmine Thomas netted 18 of her 23 points after the break, helping the No. 7 Blue Devils (18-3, 6-0 ACC) rout the No. 13 Seminoles (18-4, 4-2) in Durham, N.C.

Harvard 73, Columbia 55 - Emma Markley notched 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 blocks to lift the host Crimson (10-6, 1-1 Ivy).

Yale 58, Penn 51 - The Bulldogs (7-10, 2-1 Ivy) were strong defensively in Philadelphia, and Megan Vasquez had a team-high 16 points.
