Rawlings, Huskies upset Minnesota
Junior goalie Chris Rawlings turned aside 31 shots as Northeastern knocked off second-ranked Minnesota last night, 3-2, in the championship game of the Mariucci Classic in Minneapolis.
The Huskies (8-7-3) received goals from Vinny Saponari, Steve Quailer, and Garrett Vermeersch. Nate Condon and Taylor Matson scored for the Golden Gophers (15-6-1).
Northeastern extended its unbeaten streak to eight games, second-best in the country. The Huskies have won this tournament twice, the first victory coming over the hosts in 1997.
Northeastern has now knocked off the No. 2 team in the country on the road three times this season. The Huskies beat Notre Dame, Dec. 2-3.
Notre Dame 5, BU 2 - Anders Lee scored a pair of goals as the fifth-ranked Fighting Irish (12-6-3) beat the No. 9 Terriers (10-6-1) in South Bend, Ind.
Notre Dame also received goals from Jeff Costello, Garrett Peterson, and Billy Maday. Justin Courtnall and Wade Megan scored for BU. Megan’s goal was shorthanded, the Terriers’ nation-leading eighth this season.
North Dakota 7, Harvard 3 - Danny Kristo had two goals and an assist to lead the Fighting Sioux (10-8-2) over the Crimson (4-4-4) in Grand Forks, N.D.
Connor Gaarder had a goal and two assists and Joe Gleason assisted on three goals for North Dakota. Harvard got goals from Alex Killorn, Eric Kroshus, and Luke Greiner.
Neb.-Omaha 4, Quinnipiac 1 - Jayson Megna had a goal and two assists as the host Mavericks beat the Bobcats in the finale of their two-game nonconference series.
Matt White and Brent Gwidt each added a goal and an assist for Nebraska-Omaha (10-8-4), which played Quinnipiac (11-7-4) to a 2-2 tie in Friday’s opener. Zack Currie scored for the Bobcats, who saw their six-game unbeaten streak end.
St. Lawrence 2, Dartmouth 2 - Greg Carey scored the deciding goal in a shootout as St. Lawrence (7-10-2) won its second New Year’s Eve championship at Dartmouth after the Saints and host Big Green (6-5-2) skated to a 2-2 tie in the final of the Ledyard Bank Classic.
Tournament MVP Kyle Flanagan scored both Saints goals in regulation, completing a six-point weekend. He was joined on the all-tournament team by defenseman George Hughes, who had two goals and two assists, and Carey, who had four assists in addition to scoring the decisive shootout goal.
