Arnold powers River Hawks
Derek Arnold broke a scoreless tie by scoring 55 seconds into the third period and seventh-ranked UMass-Lowell went on to post a 3-0 win over No. 8 Merrimack last night in a Hockey East showdown in Lowell to extend its winning streak to five games.
After scoring his 14th goal to give the River Hawks (19-7-0, 14-6-0) the lead, Arnold sealed the win with another tally with 2:57 left. The win pushed UMass-Lowell past Boston College and Boston University into first place in Hockey East.
Scott Wilson and Riley Wetmore assisted on both scores by Arnold, and Wetmore finished the scoring with an empty-net goal with 1:34 remaining.
Joe Cannata had 39 saves for Merrimack (15-7-5, 11-6-3), 34 in the first two periods when UMass-Lowell dominated play.
BC 6, Vermont 1 - Chris Kreider and Johnny Gaudreau each scored twice and the fifth-ranked Eagles (18-10-1, 13-7-1 Hockey East) cruised past the host Catamounts (5-22-1, 2-18-1).
UNH 3, NU 2 - Austin Block scored twice and Stevie Moses tallied his 20th goal of the season as the host Wildcats (12-14-2, 9-11-1 Hockey East) held off the Huskies (11-13-3, 7-12-2).
Providence 4, Maine 3 - Matt Bergland scored twice and the host Friars (11-14-2, 9-10-1 Hockey East) raced out to a 3-0 lead and turned back the No. 12 Black Bears (16-9-3, 11-8-2).
Harvard 2, Rensselaer 2 - Brock Higgs scored with 1:03 left, lifting the host Engineers (7-19-3, 4-10-3 ECAC) to a tie with the Crimson (7-7-10, 6-4-8). Alex Fallstrom and Luke Greiner scored for Harvard.
Cornell 5, Brown 2 - Matt Lorito and Ryan Jacobson scored 43 seconds apart for the visiting Bears (8-13-3, 5-10-2 ECAC), but it was all Big Red (12-6-6, 9-3-5) after that as No. 13 Cornell scored five unanswered goals.
Colgate 4, Yale 2 - John Lidgett’s second goal midway through the third period broke a 2-2 tie and lifted the host Raiders (16-10-3, 7-9-1 ECAC) past the Bulldogs (12-12-2, 7-9-1).
Union 5, Dartmouth 1 - Brandon McNally scored his fifth goal of the season for the host Big Green (9-11-4, 6-8-3), but the No. 11 Dutchmen (17-6-7, 11-3-4) rolled to the ECAC win.
St. Lawrence 4, Quinnipiac 3 - Matt Weninger made 32 saves and the host Saints (11-15-3, 7-9-1 ECAC) edged the Bobcats (14-10-5, 6-7-4), who nearly erased a 4-0 deficit by scoring three third-period goals.
Women’s hockey
Harvard 4, Rensselaer 2 - Marissa Gedman scored twice and the No. 8 Crimson (17-8-1, 14-4-1 ECAC) held off the host Engineers (8-19-4, 5-12-2).
Men’s basketball
Cornell 85, Yale 84 - Johnathan Gray scored 29 points, including big 3-pointers at the end of regulation and in overtime, to lead the host Big Red (9-12, 4-3 Ivy) past the Bulldogs (15-6, 5-2), who got 22 points from Austin Morgan.
Columbia 86, Brown 60 - Matt Sullivan tallied 17 points, but the host Lions (14-9, 3-4 Ivy) were 16 of 29 from long distance and rolled past the Bears (7-17, 1-6).
Princeton 59, Dartmouth 47 - Jvonte Brooks had 11 points and a season-high 13 rebounds, but the visiting Big Green (4-19, 0-7) remained winless in Ivy play.
Middlebury 76, Trinity 47 - Ryan Sharry had 19 points and 11 rebounds and the Panthers (21-1, 9-0), ranked No. 2 in Division 3, warmed up for their NESCAC showdown against Amherst tonight with a rout of the Bantams (10-13, 2-7).
Amherst 80, Williams 78 - Aaron Toomey scored 18 points and hit the winner at the buzzer as the sixth-ranked Lord Jeffs (21-2, 9-0 NESCAC) got past the visiting Ephs (16-7, 4-5).
Women’s basketball
Harvard 66, Penn 52 - Brogan Berry scored 26 points, Victoria Lippert added 12 to become the 16th Harvard woman to top 1,000 points, and the Crimson (12-8, 5-1 Ivy) pulled away to top the visiting Quakers (8-12, 1-5).
Amherst 77, Williams 55 - Megan Robertson had 21 points and 17 rebounds and the No. 1 Lord Jeffs (23-0, 9-0 NESCAC) rolled at home.![]()
