Sullivan, Maine turn back No. 7 UMass-Lowell
Matt Mangene put Maine ahead with a goal with 1:23 left in the second period and Dan Sullivan made it stand up as 12th-ranked Maine edged No. 7 UMass-Lowell, 2-1, last night at the Tsongas Center.
The Black Bears (16-9-3, 11-8-2 Hockey East) got 35 saves from Sullivan to rebound from Friday’s loss to Providence. Maine has won seven of its last eight.
Kyle Beattie gave the Black Bears the early lead, beating Doug Carr (32 saves) at 16:45 of the opening period.
Colin Wright answered for the River Hawks (19-7-0, 14-6-0) with 4:38 to go in the second period but Mangene struck for his 13th goal and the Black Bears hung on to end UMass-Lowell’s five-game winning streak.
Merrimack 1, UNH 1 - A night after making 39 saves in a loss, Joe Cannata made 40 to help the No. 8 Warriors (15-7-6, 11-6-4 Hockey East) escape with a tie against the visiting Wildcats (12-14-3, 9-11-2).
Grayson Downing was the only player to beat Cannata, tying the game with 4:28 to go in the second period. Jeff Velleca struck first for Merrimack, getting his seventh at 19:36 of the first period.
Providence 5, UMass 4 - Michael Pereira had a hat trick for the Minutemen (10-13-5, 6-11-4 Hockey East) but the Friars (12-14-2, 10-10-1) got goals from five players to hold on in Amherst. Tim Schaller had a goal and an assist and David Brown, Daniel New, Damian Cross, and Shane Luke also scored for Providence.
Quinnipiac 7, Clarkson 6 - Kellen Jones had a hat trick and assisted on Loren Barron’s winner with 4:43 remaining to lift the visiting Bobcats (15-10-5, 7-7-4 ECAC) past the Golden Knights (14-13-5, 8-7-3).
Colgate 7, Brown 6 - Jack Maclellan had a goal and three assists but the visiting Raiders (17-10-3, 11-6-1 ECAC) scored three unanswered goals in the second period and held off the Bears (8-14-3, 5-11-2).
Rensselaer 2, Dartmouth 1 - Brandon McNally scored for the host Big Green (9-12-4, 6-9-3 ECAC) but Bryce Merriam turned aside 19 of 20 shots to boost the Engineers (8-19-3, 5-10-3).
Cornell 4, Yale 2 - Sean Collins had two goals and an assist and the No. 13 Big Red (13-6-6, 10-3-3 ECAC) built a 4-0 lead and cruised past the visiting Bulldogs (10-13-2, 7-10-1).
Bentley 3, AIC 2 - Dan Koudys scored twice and added an assist, lifting the Falcons (11-12-7, 11-6-6 Atlantic Hockey) past the host Yellow Jackets (5-23-2, 4-17-2).
Plymouth St. 4, Salem St. 3 - The visiting Panthers rallied for three third-period goals to deny Vikings coach Bill O’Neill his 500th career win. O’Neill’s record now stands at 499-309-54. He will have another chance at the milestone Thursday night at Westfield State.![]()
