Texas makes case for No. 1

Heather Schreiber scored 19 points and Jamie Carey had 13 to help No. 3 Texas stake its claim to the nation's top ranking with a 75-52 victory over Oklahoma State yesterday in Stillwater, Okla.

Texas (21-2, 9-1 Big 12) won its seventh straight game.

The Longhorns, who haven't been ranked No. 1 since Dec. 1987, could become the nation's next top-ranked team following losses last week by No. 1 Tennessee and No. 2 Duke.

The defending Big 12 champs looked every bit the part of a No. 1 contender in routing Oklahoma State (8-13, 3-7).

Stacy Stephens added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Longhorns.

Duke 81, Georgia Tech 41 -- At Durham, N.C., Vicki Krapohl scored 18 points to help the second-ranked Blue Devils beat the Yellow Jackets for the 23d straight time.

Alana Beard scored 15 points, Brittany Hunter had 14, and Jessica Foley added 11 for the Blue Devils (18-3, 9-1 ACC), who rebounded from an 80-74 loss to Florida State Wednesday.

Krapohl, a senior, led Duke in scoring for the first time in the 113 games she has played. She scored 15 first-half points, and Duke led, 49-16, at halftime.

Fallon Stokes scored 15 points to lead Georgia Tech (11-11, 2-8), which lost its third straight.

Arizona St. 73, Stanford 53 -- Jenny Thigpin had 16 of her career-high 18 points in the second half as the host Sun Devils (15-6, 9-3 Pac-10) handed the seventh-ranked Cardinal back-to-back losses for the first time this season.

Nicole Powell had 22 points and 15 rebounds -- her 43d career double-double and 13th this season -- for the Cardinal (17-5, 10-3), who dropped an 88-83 decision at Arizona Thursday.

Louisiana Tech 89, Nevada 57 -- Amisha Carter had 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead the eighth-ranked Lady Techsters in Reno.

Amber Obaze added 17 points and Trina Frierson scored 15 for Louisiana Tech (17-2, 10-1 Western Athletic Conference), which won its ninth in a row.

SW. Missouri St. 68, N. Iowa 54 -- At Springfield, Mo., Kari Koch scored 21 points to lead the 25th-ranked Lady Bears (19-1, 10-0 Missouri Valley) to their 17th straight victory.
